Camshaft Positioner Sensor

I read some info on this sensor going out. Can someone tell me where it is located, and is it worth buying one as a spare.

I have a spare now after reading numerous posts here about it. It's on the front of the engine near the water pump.

Look down in this forum for a thread called "experts..please help". johnsdiesel posted exactly what you need.
Get it fom International if you want to save some money, but you may need your engine info on the passenger valve cover sticker.

Also make sure you keep a 10mm open/boxend wrench with it, not much good on the side of the road without the wrench. Saved me when i had my X.

The engine will turn over but it won't start. Also, it usually doesn't throw a code.

Correct, no tach movement. Usually before it goes out you will periodically experience stuttering. This started happening about 2-3 months before mine finally crapped out.

sensor location

mine would shutter and die occasionally for nearly six months before i finally broke down and changed my sensor. i got one on ebay for $75, still in the original Ford package. I changed it out during my lunch hour from work one day. it is easiest changed from underneath the truck and is located at the very front of the motor near the harmonic balancer. the hardest part on mine was getting the old sensor out of the hole and getting the wires unclipped from the old sensor. might be a good idea to keep something like a big screwdriver or something to pry with to get the old sensor out. hope this helps

Just went through this issue, my 99 would stall at first occasionally while at idle than became more frequent and while driving. Replaced the sensor last Friday and problem solved.

A real easy install. You know Murphy's law I expected the worse but only took about 15 minutes.

Someone had told me about how out of the blue they will just quit. I live near an International dealer so I picked one up and put it in the glove box. Sure enough the next week I was running about 75mph on the interstate and the motor just died. I tried to start it but noticed the tach wasn't moving so I knew exactly what it was. 20 minutes later i was on my way. When I got back in town I bought another one and put in the glovebox as I have been told, they may last 5 miles or 500,000. Thats some good advice im glad i heeded.
