Over drive trans

I am restoring a 77 f150 4 wheel drive. It has a 400 engine, I would like to use a manuel overdrive trans. I am looking for suggestions on what transmission would work best.

Would a five speed from a newer f 250 / f 350 that had a 460 work?

A ZF5 from an '88-97 F250-450 series with the diesel or 460 would work, or even one of the ZF6 trannies from the Superduties. However, the ZF6 ratios from the diesels aren't really friendly for a gas engine. (gas is 5.72-.076 diesels are 4.14-0.70 for the ZF5, similar with the ZF6, but 6 gears and about 6" longer overall)

In addition to the tranny, you'll have to deal with it having an integral bellhousing, plumbing a hydraulic master cylinder in and it being a PIA to replace the slave cylinder.

In the long run it's VERY worth it. I have the ZF5 in my '75 Bronco and am looking to install one in the '77 crew cab F250 I'm building as the tow rig (also adding a diesel, etc...).

I have a zf-5 in my powerstroke, and if I could, I would replace it with almost anything else. its garbage. E40D is a big step up from that piece...

my 500+ thousand mile clark sounds like its processing rocks into sand, but it shifts much better and smoother than the 170,000 mile ZF abomination in the diesel... the zf needs to be double-clutched into every gear except OD

I imagine you would have to use a divorced transfer case. there are some guys who have made custom adaptors, and the clark is a popular trans with serious jeep people, so there may be an adaptor available that I do not know about.

a clark with O/D has both granny low (you can start in third) and 5th is an OD gear.

NV4500 is the way to go. advance adapters has everything you need to bolt it in, and your stock clutch linkage works with it. Most major change is changing the tranny mount, moving the t-case back, shortening the back, and lengthening the front drive shaft.
