Last year my 71F1004x4 sometimes would't start, and since I have headers I believed it to be fried starter. Now I just get home and turn the key off, pull the key out, and the truck stays running. I just stalled it to shut it off. Is this another charateristic of a bad starter?
Does the truck stay running normally after you pull the key? If so you need a new ignition switch or you have some shorted wires somewhere. When you pull turn the key off it is supposed to kill power to the ignition coil.
No, actually it seems the problem started after a Pertronix install. Could this be the culprit? Not starting maybe every 10 tries. The truck stays running after the key is out.
I had a sable once that when you pulled the key it stayed running. Worked well in the winter. Could leave the car, lock the doors and come back to heat.
Sounds like you need to recheck the wiring on that new ignition. It is getting juice all the time. This would cause the battery to discharge causing the starting problem and would explain the key not shutting the engine off.

If the above is true, and you did not have a problem with the switch before the pertronix install, then I would suspect the wiring more than the switch.
