I was having the same problem with my DSL line except mine would stay out for days. Our house has the phone lines stucco's into the outer walls so there was no replacing them. I finally had Steve run heavier line directly from the box to where my computer sits and use that as my dedicated line. Before, any little splash of lightening would zap out one or two filters. I no longer have to worry about using filters on all my phones and haven't had any problems since.
The new wire I have to run will be around 30 feet total. Depending on the total cost of the wire, if worst came to worst could I just buy some regular phone cord extension and run it without any problems?

a hardware store might carry cat-5 cable and cut to length. if you work in an office building, check to see if the "computer guys" have any laying around. the network cables that connect a computer to the wall jack is made from cat-5 and sometimes the computer guys have the tools to make them custom lengths. ask them for 50 feet. if not, stop next to the next phone guy parked and working. ask him for a chunk of cable, he/she should give you some. i've been a phone guy for 16 years, most of us are pretty good guys. lastly, don't use a 30' piece of silver phone cord for that run. the main thing about cat-5 is that the wire inside is twisted. the flat silver phone cord is not. the flat cord is ok for a few feet, but 30 would degrade your signal. good luck
So I should maybe buy a 50 foot piece of network cable and cut the ends off and run that from the line into the house to the phone jack in the wall already and get rid of the old wire? Got ya! Sounds good. I'll let you guys know! Thanks alot!
I am going to go buy the wire tomorrow. So just to confirm I buy network cable (the twisted cat 5 type) and run it AS a phone line from the basement to the phone jack my DSL modem runs to?
Yes, you can. Cat 5 cable will have 4 pairs inside. You will not need all of them. Just be careful when you wire it and to use the same pairs on each end. The pairs are color coded. When running the line, try to keep it away from any electrical source and avoid kinks or tight bends. An electrical source can introduce unwanted current inside the wires and mess up your signal. The Cat 5 cable you will probably get is not shielded (called UTP for Unshielded Twisted Pair) and is subject to interference. You can get STP, Shielded Twisted Pair, but it's expensive and is ideally suited to be placed in areas where there are interference sources. You won't find STP at Home Depot, Lowe's and the like. Good Luck!
yup, that'll work! let me know if you need wire color help. you should be using the green and red wires IN the JACK. oh, the network cable will have 4-pairs of wires in it; each pair has certain "twists per inch". be sure to use a TWISTED PAIR. any pair will be fine. just wrap the other three unused pairs around the cable. maintain the twist to the very end; only untwist what you need. Oh, and unplug from the DEMARC where the line comes in and only re-connect when your done. a ringing line shoots upwards of 90+ Volts AC. an old phone fart like me is used to it. good luck
Well, I went to the local Radio Shack today and bought 50' of Cat 5 twisted network cable. I ran a brand new line from a new jack in the wall right to where the phone line comes in the house. My connection speed is the same but hopefully it fixes my disconnect problems. Thanks for all the help guys, I will update you if I have a problem or at the end of the weekend if all is good. Thanks again!
did you ever have the phone comapny check the wire from the box on the side of the house to the central office for bad wire. Also do you know what the distace of the line is from the house to the C.O. the DSL provider should be able to test the line and tell you this info. They also need to make sure the is no electronics on the line( the telco's line), dsl likes clean runs, any bad/dirty copper on the line will cause a problem. i used to work for a dsl provider.
Hidden in your post below is the answer. Unplug one item at a time until the problem resolves.

I did a test. In your house (at least in mine) the phone line comes in from outside. There is a regular phone jack in the wall that is hooked to the phone line. Then there is a splitter that has a regular phone cord end on one end and other the other are all the wires from the different cords running through the house. I unhooked the splitter from the phone jack in the wall. now none of the phones work. I hooked my dsl modem into the wall where the phone line comes directly into the house. Before I did this I was playing online games with my PS2 and could not stay connected for more than 5 mins. I did this and played for 2.5 hours straight. So I think I am going to run a sperate new wire right to my dsl modem in my room. And all should be good (I hope!)
Ok, here's how the filters go. The dsl modem will need to be plugged in through a filter IF there is a phone line plugged into the same jack with it, if it is by itself, it will not need a filter. Every other phone in the house that is on the same phone line will need a filter. If there is nothing plugged into the phone jack, then it won't need a filter. Your problem sounds like EMI, though, make sure that your modem is not within one foot of anything electronic, and also, make sure that it's sitting on carpet. If the issue is not with the filters or the EMI, then it's in the phone lines. Good luck!
I'm pretty sure it's the phone lines. I was playing games online last night and I was getting disconnected so I pulled the main plug downstairs so only my "NEW" line I ran up to my room for the modem was working. I played for another couple hours no problems. I have tried just unplugging the phones from the walls. Maybe I just need to run new phone lines. Frustrating.....
About 3 weeks ago I called the interet company. I told them my situation and told them everything I did. I told them I need them to do a line test for me. I think the guy knew that I knew what I was talking about because he said he would. He told me they did the test and a guy was going to call me within 2 days with the results. Well, they didn't call me BUT my internet has been working fine ever since then! I have got disconnected twice in 3 weeks (seems normal to me). Bad news: I have since started to get billed for my internet (I was getting it for free). I have paid for high speed DSL internet since July of 2003. Oh well, better to pay and get service that works!
When I got my DSL, I was having a similar problem, and tried all of the things suggested above. I ended up calling the phone company (not my internet provider) and told them that I heard static in the line (I lied). Anyway the guys calls me back a day later and tells me that my line checked out fine. But from that day on, my DSL has worked perfectly for 2 years with no disconnects.
