i need real internet help

i live in northwest alabama, and currnetly at my g/f house where i stay 98% of the time they have a cable modem through comcast cable, well they say it is toooooo high and ARE GOING TO SWITCH, but they dont know what they are going to switch to. the cable modem is extremely fast, and you dont have to have the extra phone line.
they dont see the advantage of paying $50 and no extra phone line and $10-$15 and have to have the extra phone line, i think they might try to get by with out the extra phone line and see how it goes,
what is a decent alternative to the $50 cable modem. i used to have dial up AOL and swore i'd never ever go back, i play online gaming and look at 8-10 differnt message boards on semi daily basis, not having the cable modem will kill me.
and mother in law said something about not getting bellsouth fast acess DSL but i have no clue why, are there any decent alternatives???
please help.

Check with your local phone service for having DSL.

Better yet is Satellite TV & Internet

Stick with cable or... and this one is good... Get the cable modem hooked up in your name and pipe in the bedroom window... Then no one will know...

Good idea furball69.

When I moved to cable and dropped my dialup and second phone line I saved ~$5 per month. Cable is cheaper for me than two phone lines, not to mention the speed.

You can't play online games with satellite service because the ping is WAY high.

Buy your neighbor a brand new wireless router for his cable modem. Tell him it will keep the ebil hackers from stealing his megahurtz, then get yourself a wireless USB access point to enjoy his broadband.

Don't you also need a phone line and a dial-up modem for your uplink on satallite?

No, furball, I dont have to have a dial up modem. I have to have high speed for work and satellite was my only option. Sucks pretty bad too. My company pays 89 a month for this service and it is not all its cracked up to be. The upload speed is up to 50kbps and download speeds up to 500 kbps ( actually only about 100 kbps) It is not worth the money at all.

if you have the system to support it. any dsl will work fine. ours is only 25$ a month and they take it right out of our phone bill so i dont have to remember to pay it. our computer was low quality tho so it slowed it down. my freinds have really good computers and it runs just like cable would.

I too agree with offering to pay half the internet bill. I think any of us would pay 25 bucks for unlimited high speed access to FTE, err I mean the internet.

Satellite Internet

I have Direcway Satellite internet, very expensive, $100 a month..I cannot get cable or DSL too far out from the big city.. It is fast as DSL, almost as fast as cable, but it sure beats dialup..

I am new to the High speed net, I've been on it since the new year. I just did all the shopping and comparisons, and have to say that Comcast high speed is the best way to surf the web.
I hate Comcast, because they are raping our wallets, they have a good service, but I do not see how they justify charging 50 a month for this service.
I would keep comcast, and figure out a way to justify the costs.

Show them the math.
$50 per month for cable vs. $17-25 per month for another phone line + $25 per month for AOL or MSN or some other provider.

Still $42-$50 per month, plus a LOT slower access + the hook-up time/expense, etc.

Now, you might want to offer to pay for 1/2 of the access (reasonable since you are there 98% of the time anyway) or even all of the bill. (Still reasonable.)

DSL might or might not be available. I have no idea as to the cost of DSL, but, I know it's not as fast as cable. (One of the guys I work with has DSL.)

My 2¢.
