DSL Modem Question

I recently moved to my new house and am having a problem with my high speed DSL. My computer and PS2 are hooked into a router. The PS2 is hard-wired and the computer has a wireless network card. The router is hardwired to my DSL modem and my DSL modem is wired into the phone jack in the wall.

Everything works great except I get disconnected from my internet sometimes. On my modem there are 4 lights. A power light (which is always on), an activity light (which flashes with uploads and downloads), an Ethernet light (which also flashes with uploads and downloads) and a DSL light. The DSL light is always on unless I lose my connection.

In my old house I very rarely (if ever) lost my connection. In my new house I lose my connection approx 2-10 times every hour. It's not really a big deal when surfing the web, but when I am playing online games on the PS2 I always get disconnected. Does anyone know what could cause this? I have tried changing the phone cord from the modem to the wall, and plugging it in 2 other different phone jacks. I have not changed any other computer settings at all as well. I have checked for viruses as well as SpyWare and there is none. Any ideas? Thanks.

have the phone company check the lines. the phone line from the house to the central office might not be the best for high speed data. too much noise on hte line will cause the connection to drop.

Matt,
Are you using the same DSL provider as your old house? Did it work reliably at all when you moved in or has it never worked correctly?

How old are the phone lines in the new place? When I first got DSL the connection was horrible until I had the phone company come over and check the lines. They ended up replacing some of the phone lines and the part ( I don't know what its called) that comes into my house ( all free of charge ). I've never had a problem since then.

If you don't have the filters in the right place, you wouldn't be able to connect at all would you? Thats what I was told.
I'm far from an expert though.

We had it happen to us, ether on of the phones in the house didn't have a filter or was pluged into the wrong plug on the filter (on ours one side is only for dsl and the other for phones and stuff) The internet was slow and would always kick us off :\

Well, all the phones have the filters on them. The internet worked awesome in my old place but now it is kicking me off in my new place. I was thinking it may be the wiring. Maybe I should call the provider (who also is the company that does my home phone service). I didn't really notice if it wa reliable as soon as I moved in or not because I was too busy unpacking and not playing online games with my PS2 (which is where I notice the drops the most). If one of my phone filters just happens to be wrecked could it cause interference? Maybe I should try unhooking all my phones from the wall next time my PS2 is online? Any other ideas? These are great!

is there an alarm with dialing ability intalled in your home? sounds like a filter is lacking somewhere. i went around the whole "filter everywhere" scene and installed a single filter/breakout module on the side of my house. i ran a single wire to the DSL modem location, and hooked it up.

Equium's hook-up is the one I like best. If your new house is older and wired with old-style quad cabe (4 conductor parallel) you might try disconecting it temporarily and running some twisted pair staight from demarc terminals outside to the computer modem (with the filter of course) and see if it gets better... you might have a lot of noise being induced on the inside wire. This is a divide and conquer problem. GL

There is no alarm with dialing abilities. My modem is hooked directly to a jack in the wall without a filter. The only filters I have are hooked from each of my two phones, to the filter then into the wall. It is very frustrating....

try this, (i have), plug a filter in between the DSL modem and the jack. plug your dsl modem into the dsl plug of the filter. i think the filter works both ways; filtering dsl away from your phones and filtering your phones away from your dsl. FWIW, my dsl is on a second, rarely used phone line. every time that line is used, my dsl modem flakes out for a minute or two. i don't have the time to check it out. like i said, it's on a rarely used line. good luck

My modem says not to plug a filter between it and the phone jack.

I did a test. In your house (at least in mine) the phone line comes in from outside. There is a regular phone jack in the wall that is hooked to the phone line. Then there is a splitter that has a regular phone cord end on one end and other the other are all the wires from the different cords running through the house. I unhooked the splitter from the phone jack in the wall. now none of the phones work. I hooked my dsl modem into the wall where the phone line comes directly into the house. Before I did this I was playing online games with my PS2 and could not stay connected for more than 5 mins. I did this and played for 2.5 hours straight. So I think I am going to run a sperate new wire right to my dsl modem in my room. And all should be good (I hope!)

Good idea! Since DSL is really a network connection, why not use Category 3 or 5 cable? The better the wire, the more reliable the connection. Since your run shouldn't be too long, it should not prove too expensive.

The new wire I have to run will be around 30 feet total. Depending on the total cost of the wire, if worst came to worst could I just buy some regular phone cord extension and run it without any problems?
