When i started working where i work now( a electric motor rebuilding place) my boss said that every 6 months i get a raise. first 6 months he told me that he bumped me up a dollar a hour. now its been a week over a year, should I ask him, or keep waiting. If i do ask him, how should i go about that, I'v never done that before.
I was due a raise about a month ago. Didn't get it until last week & it was paid retro.
It wasn't no dollar an hour but I can't bitch to much about 0.88 when everyone else said that the anual raises are only a quarter.
In my experience raises are usually a yearly thing, but if he hired you and told you that you would get a raise every 6 mo., then he should keep his word. If this is a larger company, you can go straight to the HR dept. and ask to see the policy about raises. If its a mom and pop shop, you'll just have to get the courage to ask the boss. Don't forget about retroactive pay.
its not so much "how" you ask him; it's when! ask him right after you do a bang up job on something, not right after he pays the taxes.
maybe you could bring it up without bringing it up. say, "man, i really appreciate this job, no other boss i've had gave me a raise every six months. thank you for doing that." if this doesnt trigger his brain then he may be trying to avoid the subject, and unless its in writing that you get the increase then you'll just have to keep impressing him.
I got a 50 cent raise every six months. Now I'm topped out. About the only raise I get these days is whenever a girl dumps me. A raise in the amount of disposable income I have at the end of the month at least...
I wotk at a State University as a stationary engineer, our hourly wage is the state prevailing wage. If I were to compalin it literally woudln't do do any good, our raise is usually 3.5%-4% a year every July, I just recieved a retroactive addition to my last check along with about 17 hours OT, it was a big boy check.
