I don't know if I'm feeling ambitious or stupid, but I'm thinking about rebuilding the carb on my 87 F-250 5.8L. Idle seems a little rough and I already replaced the plugs, cap, rotor and wires. I'm not sure if I got the right kit or not. My carb ID tag says Motorcraft E6HE CB A 7E8, the kit is for Holley models 4180C, 4180EG or 4190EG. Is this the right kit? Also are there any special tools required and is adjusting it fairly straightforward, or will I never get it right afterwards?
The rbeuild itself will be fairly straightforward, and adjustment shouldn't be too hard either. Carb rebuilds aren't rocket science, just pay attention to the rebuild, take it apart and put it back together in one shot, and you should be good to go.
Sounds like the right kit.
While you have it off, on the front of the baseplate, you will see two plugs (look like very small freeze-out plugs, drill these aout and remove them and you will be able to adjust the air/fuel mixture to help smooth out the idle some.
Ditto that. Even though I don't particularly care for Holley carbs, they are very simple. Easy rebuild. Follow the instructions, and the most important thing is to just get everything clean. Use the plastic "straw" on a can of carb cleaner to blow through all of the passages to make sure they are clear and it should be fine.
