I just traded for my '45 FORD and it had a "NEW" vin tag, looked very nice, had the ford emblem etc, but I cant believe that it was missing a '1' on the VIN according to the title. The title shows 699y1100089 but the tag shows
699y?100089. The title also shows the model as 9y11 so that makes me believe that someone missed the extra one when they did new vin tag. I want to get a correct tag before I go to DMV (this is an out of state vehicle, so the vin must be verified), they can create a lot of frustration. Please email me off list with your ideas and suggestions!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks so much. George in Tallahassee
I don't see why you would have a problem getting a title if you're turning over a properly filled out one. It's my understanding that as long as you have the title signed over to you, they don't verify. Wouldn't hurt to have a Bill of Sale with the title.
We didn't go that route because we wanted to keep the original 11/41 title rather than have Tallahassee destroy a piece of history. We did a carbon paper scratching of the VIN numbers off the frame on the DMV's specified paper verified by a notary and a few weeks later, received the new Fla. title in the mail.
I'm not sure which year they quit etching the VIN # in the frame, but that may be an avenue for you to think about.
BTW - check out the Florida Chapter here on FTE while you're around. We're trying to get some activity there.
If the vehicle is from OUT OF STATE, you must have the VIN verified in FL. Thats where my problem comes in, they dont match. SOmeone made a new plate and left a one off the number. I was hoping someone could tell me where I could get another plate made, it is obvious someone had this made recently.
ALso, could someone tell me where to find the numbers stamped on the '45????? I would feel certain they are somewhere!
The frame numbers are on the top of the driver side rale, a little in front of the cab. There may be a horn partially obscuring them, as was the case with my 46. Mike
I just checked a site provided by 46fordtruck, who should be cruising through here soon, and is the expert at ID on these vehicles. The Y in the vin number labels the truck as a one ton. When you find the numbers on the rale there will be a star stamped before and after the number. Mike
We didn't tell them that we had a title. Just told them that the truck came from a "Farm" in N. Dakota, presented a Bill of Sale and asked what paperwork we needed to fill out to get it titled. Had very little problems.
The less information you give as far as titling, the better off you are in most cases.
Thanks for all the help. I will definitely check the drivers side top of the frame rail tonight to find the correct number. Is the one ton letter common? It will just be a part of the number, correct? What if it was just a standard PU, then no letter? My truck has a chevy motor, but I think the main frame is intact. Interesting on the year, I guess it is very possible to be wrong. If so, I'll follow the advice of Darlene and get a copy of it and apply for a new title. Thanks again all, but just a few more questions?
Anyone know of an inexpensive source for bed runners? Just strips of aluminum/chrome to keep the wood from being scrapped. Also any other ideas on grill material for the 45? I was thinking diagonal mesh behind the vertical strips. Also any tips on fabricating these strips out of stainless would be appreciated. George in tallahassee
The Y is part of your VIN, found on driver's side, tiop rail near the steering box. A 1/2 ton has a C, a 1 ton has a Y, regardless of what body was on the truck, stake, pickup, etc. Yes, the 6 indicates a 1946 V8. Orignal they had no material behind the 15 vertical grille bars, just open. I've seen small bars made of billett alum fitted to the inside of the grille openings, but never seen stainless. The stainless bars, you want them like the original bars, or something more custom? DMV's messing up a VIN isn't unheard of...they messed up the VIN on the title of my '46 6 cylinder truck, made it 1GO instead of 1GC...gotta get that fixed soon. Oh, and remember, sometimes the VIN's on the rail aren't stamped real deep, so you may have to clean the area up to read them.
Well first my VIN tag was one number off from the title, then '45Ford tells me the VIN indicates it is actually a '46 instead of the '45 that is on the title. He also tells me where the VIN is on the frame, and now I discover that frame is long gone, replaced with a '70 Camaro front and rear. So, Ive decided to try the DMV and hope that they do not catch the missing '1' on the plate and issue a title. On the year question, is there any chance some trucks with a 6 in the VIN were actually titled as '45's????? Not a big deal to me, just curious.

For a source of "bed runners" try using old station wagon roof rack rub rails. The local wrecking yard should have several. I've used Pinto in the past.
It is possible that a '46 could be titled as a '45, my brother's '66 Mustang fastback is titled as '65, even though it is one of the last made in July '66. There aren't really any major diff's between a '45 and '46, so no biggie. I think you shouldn't have any probs with it, one number off...they should work with you and make it all right.
