Just an update... I finally took my 04 Expy XLT in to have the radio replaced (they agreed to put in an Audiophile from an EB Expy) to resolve my high-pitched radio noise (from the built-in cooling fan). Well I told them to take a test drive and check out my rear end whining/roaring noise. At first they told me they thought it might be the tires (I told them the sound goes away immediately when you take you foot off th gas), so they switched the tires around to test that. Long story short, they ended up replacing the ring and pinion gear and all is good now.
So let's recap - I've put 4500 miles on my '04 and have replaced the following so far:
1) all four tires (the orig were out-of-round)
2) 6-cd radio
3) rear end
