I have a 99 with a 5 speed and 4.30's. First is almost never used, except when creeping around in 4WD. 5th spins the motor a little too high on the highway. With 4.10's or 3.73's the 5 speed is probably a better compromise. The 6 speed was unavailable with the V-10 in 99 when I bought mine or I'd have one.

I know these ZFs are fairly strong but I was wondering if anyone on here has this setup?
Should I hold out for a 6-speed?

I have a 2000 with a 5-speed and 373 gears. Great combo with just the right gear ratios. Just in case you are not aware, these HD manual transmissions are more work to operate then a light duty model.

I've owned both a 460 & ZF 5 speed 4.10 axles and my present V10 6 speed 4.30 geared. The ZF was a better shifting trans from the factory then the 6 speed, BUT with the BD short shift kit, the 6 speed is hands down better now. The gear splits are near perfect in the 6 speed. The ZF seemed quieter and reverse was easier to get into then the 6 speed. All in all, I like the 6 speed much better, especially for towing.

That may be to my advantage since the truck has 3.73s and 37s.

Guess I'm gonna have to "steal" this truck to make it worthwhile since a re-gear is in the cards...
I'd like to get a 6-speed but heck, finding a V10 here is hard enough! Let alone, being able to choose trannys...

2001 F250 SC XL with 5 speed and 3.73 NLS - no problems with my 5 speed. It's essentially a 4 speed. 1st is so low that I've only used it a few times to get heavier trailers moving. Driving around town, I always start in 2nd. I pull my bass boat up a fairly steep boat ramp in 2nd gear as 1st is even too low for that. At 65 mph, I'm turing about 2100-2200 rpm in OD (5th).

I just brought one home from Texas to Pennsylvania.

It used about a qt of oil in 1800 miles which I feel is managable. I also picked up a takeoff bed for $500 by the side of the road on the way home. Does anyone know the axle codes for the 4.10 and 4.30. I was turning 2500 RPMs at 65 mph. Fuel mileage with the spare box turned upside down on the way home (and catching some wind) was about 13.
