I am a new poster. I have reading FTE fort 2 years now. Because of all of you I own a 2003 reg & 2004 super Ford SD. Now to the question???
I tow a landscape trailer 5000 lbs 6 months & plow Snow for the other 6. I love the V10s but thinking PSD. gas is 2.15 & desiel is 1.85. Should i switch to save on MPG ???Please any thought would really help. thanks Brian P
The mileage is better and the value of a diesel over time is better than a gas motor. You will get more miles out of a diesel truck as well which means replacement could be less often.
Plowing is really hard on vehicles so maybe replacement every few years is what you are expecting to do anyway. Also, get the dual alternator if you buy the diesel.
Looking at fuel cost to make your decision between a diesel and a gasser is the wrong thing to do, in my opinion. The diesel is a $5000 option. Add the Torque Shift and it quickly becomes a $6500 option. $5000 buys 2325 gallons of gasoline @ 2.15/gal. $6500 buys 3023 gallons @ 2.15/gal. So basically with the cost difference of the diesel and the gasser, you could drive either 18600 or 24184 miles at 8 mpg. That is a lot of fuel and a lot of miles by only factoring in the option cost. It would take a lot of miles before you made up the difference in price by switching to diesel.
BUT, there are a ton of other reasons to get a diesel. Better power, better torque. Tows better. Burns cleaner. The Torque Shift is a phenominal tranny (it will be available for the gasser in '05 ). I currently own both a 6.0 and a V10, and I can honestly say I would never buy another gas powered truck ever again. The technological advances in diesels in recent years has been unbeleivable. Honestly, I thought the V10 had TONS of power, until I got the 6.0. Now every time I drive the V10 it feels gutless. Nevertheless, it is still a good engine.
I have owned the v-10 great truck with no trailer, if you tow use a 6.0
Heck if i did not tow I would still own a 6.0
Tim, I am glad you said it. A gas truck may as well be a Ranger for all I care. IF you want a real truck go diesel. The benefits of the diesel far outweigh the one or two benefits of a gas engine.
I've owned 4 Rangers before I bought this PSD two weeks ago. IMHO this is by far the best truck I've ever owned not only in quality, but in durability, options and just all around love . . . I drive all highway right now and am getting upwards of 19mpg (1450 miles as of right now).
Just sticking to the diesel side of things . . . I think that this truck will last me the 200k miles I need it to without a problem, so long as I keep up the TLC. I don't think you can ask that of your average gasser . . . .

There are thousands of us who are counting on it going to 300k or more!
300k would be awesome . . . but 200k would be satisfactory.
I took the truck up to Eleven Mile for fishing last weekend (I live at 6k ft adn the lake is about 10.5k ft abov sea level). That truck rambled up the canyon and on the flats like it was no body's business . . . I"ve never had to "slow down" when in the canyons, i've always owned a vehicle that struggled at that incline at that altitude . . . was awesome!

I still have my ranger. I use it for easier parking in Seattle and it has 190,000 on it so I expect my SD to get at least 380,000 on it.
I have an E450 with V10 on a Class C RV. It's not that heavy. The thing gets about 7-9mpg. The nine comes with downhill or flat and level with a 15 knot tail wind.
This F250 with the 6.0 out pulls, out performs and gets better fuel economy. No choice. I won't go back to a gasser.
I had an '02 V10, now have an '04 6.0--basically in the same trim level. I should have bought the '02 with the 7.3 and saved the tradein loss on the V10 when I got the 6.0. To me, its a no-brainer--get the 6.0.
I'm in the same boat.....I have a '99 V10 with 180,000 km and I priced out a new '04 PSD (same truck I have but the diesel), the $40,000 cdn on top of my truck is alot of cash. I figure I have two choices:
1) get the '04....with the 0% financing
2) put some money into my truck (exhaust, windshield, rims, tires) and run it for another 70,000-100,000 km
Either way I'm throwing away money by fixing up the old one or losing money in depreciationon the new one!! I use my truck for work, mainly measuring jobs, but I also have a 20' Nash Travel trailer and I go sledding to the mountains (5 hrs one way) 5-6 times a year!! Decisions, decisions

Tuff call I know............had a v-10 and now a 6.0 never looked back
My v-10 when got rid of it had 11k on it, that was all
PLC, I have had the opportunity to own both. Multiple 7.3's, and a new 6.0. My wife howver just doesn't like driving a diesel everyday, so she has a V-10 Excursion. All 3/4 ton, except the 6.0, its a 350, with 3:73 LS rears. Have towed the same loads with both and I can say without bias that there is absolutely no comparison. After you have towed with a PSD, 7.3 or 6.0 you will never again want to tow with a v-10. The V-10 is constantly searching for a gear, upshifting, downshifting. even with small tow loads. I hate towing with it. If you are going to be towing at all, for any amount of distance, bite the bullet and get the PSD. Power, durability, longevity, mpg's etc... Resale is also a huge concern. The resale on the PSD's is remarkable. They really hold their value well. V-10's are tough to give away. They don't hold their value well at all. These are my personal experiences, I am sure you can find many people around here that will disagree.
