I know there are various posts on this topic, but I would like help as it pertains to my situation.
I would like to get a new:
F250 Lariat Crew Cab Short bed 4X4 with:
Off Road Package
Auto trans
3.73 LSD
Heated Captains Chairs
Clearance Lights
2 tone paint
V10 or PSD??????
1. It will be a driveway monger (my standard sized garage is just too short for any fullsized truck 224" length).
2. I live in mid to south east PA.
3. I currently do not tow anything.
4. I plan (atleast I think) to keep the truck 'til the wheels fall off.
5. My daily commute is about 30 miles one way (starts off as hilly-backroads then I move into heavy traffic <28 lights in the last 15 miles>).
If I calculated correctly:
V10 = 11 mpg = $800 option
PSD = 15 mpg = $4000 option
fuel avg $1.30 per gal -> it would cost me $67 per year more in fuel for the V10. It looks like the V10 is the right choice, but the PSD should last longer, but the V10 is cheaper to repair (+ I don't have diesel repair exp.), the diesel sounds cool, ten cylinders is cool, yada, yada, yada....

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Jan-02 AT 04:02 PM (EST)]I would concur with Monsta's assessment. From what you've said in your post, I don't think that you can cost justify the powerplant decision one way or the other. The V10 will probably last until "the wheels fall off", providing you properly maintain it, so I don't know as longevity of the engine is that much of a factor. You might ask around about the dealership, however, as they are not all created equal (Blue Oval Certified or not); where you buy your ride might not be where you want it serviced.
My truck is equipped with the V10 and 3.73 gears, and I like it just fine--in fact, I had to special order it because at the time I couldn't find a truck that was NOT a diesel, and I wanted a gasser.
Either way, I think that you will enjoy your truck. I readily admit my bias, but I think the Ford SuperDuty line ride and look terrific. Good luck, and let us know how everything works out.
You just compared fuel costs. Factor in maintainance costs. V10 takes 6 quarts of oil and a $3 oil filter (at WalMart). PSD takes 15 quarts and a $10 filter (WalMart agian). Also the fuel filter needs changing more often in the PSD than in the V10, adding to the hassle. If I lived in the mountains (I don't) I'd get the PSD no matter what. Instead I got the V10 and love it. Not every truck brand has this difficult choice, thank goodness we do!
Yeah, it sure is BAD to have to make that tough choice;-) But also in your fuel mileage calculations you figured the same fuel price. I'm in New York State, but I don't think PA. is that much different...diesel is about 8-10 cents a gallon more.
Only other thing is that IF you think you will Tow anything heavy in the near future you make want to go with the 4.30ls rears.
I don't know about back east but out here on the west coast we have to run our rigs through emissions test in order to get the registration renewed. With a desiel you get a waiver. Saves a little money, besides the amount of pollution with the diesel is less then a gasser. Plus you get to hear that awesome turbo whine which is really cool and functional.
Plus!!
You get to buy 14 quarts of oil every 3K.
Spend $9+ on an oil filter.
Pay more for fuel. (right now anyway)
Buy more fuel filters.
Hope the fuel you bought won't gel when it's cold.
Buy fuel conditioner to combat gelling.
Be tempted at every turn to modify your rig cause for $4370 all you got 250HP/505LbFt when there is SO much more that the PSD will do.
Yeah, a PSD is a good idea for a foo-foo commutin' truck that won't be towin' anything!
(I LOVE diesels! So this is just a joke... although a true joke. NO offense should be taken by anyone!! )

>are either a gas man or a diesel man or woman.
yeah you're right!! End of discussion!
As for disclaimers well, I just wanted to make sure that this didn't turn into a flamer....
I have basically the same setup you are looking at minus the off road package.
I drove both the psd and the 10 and I really prefered the 10. It fit my budget and I could still hear the radio and carry on a conversation in the truck.
I like the diesel, and was leaning that way, but could not justify it in the budget and with the wife. I am really happy with my truck.
I just towed this past weekend for the first time and it was a light load.
I towed about 2500 pounds several hundred miles. The funny thing is that I was going down in elevation on the first trip and I got only about 11.5 mpg. Then coming back up in elevation on the return trip, I averaged 14.6 mpg. I don't really get it, except that on the first trip the wind was against me for half of it. The best thing was that I could tow all day long with this rig at 75-80 mph and going up hill step into the throttle and it would climb up to 90 mph. This thing runs like crazy and pulls hard all the way up to the speed limiter towing or not.
I don't run that fast all the time, but had to try it out on this first run.
Basically for your situation, I would reccomend the V10, if you were towing 7000 pounds plus then I would say go for the diesel. That is where it really shines.
