Piston slap?
Hi to all, I have a 99 f-150 with the 5.4l engine. I recently started noticing a "ticking" sound coming from the motor. It kinda sounds like piston slap or maybe a broken piston skirt. The only thing is that it gets louder as it gets warm. Does this sound right or not. I thought if it was a slapping piston it would get quieter as it got hotter.

In every case that I've seen, piston slap goes completely away or gets almost imperceptable after the engine warms up to operating temperature. I have never heard of a true "piston slap" noise getting worse with warmup. The cause of piston slap is too much clearance between the piston and the bore, so when the engine warms, the piston expands, and the noise diminishes.
You may have a wrist pin or valve train related noise, especially if your engine is high mileage. Try to find a competent engine builder in your area, and pay him to listen to the sound. Good luck!

Well the engine has 115,000 miles on it, I hope thats not high milage yet! All kidding aside I really hope I can get many more miles outa this motor. I'll try to describe the "ticking" as best as possible. It first started out as a tick only noticable when riding down the highway, when slightly applying the gas and then backing off the noise could be hear when i backed off the gas. Now the ticking is non-stop on start-up, idle, and running down the highway at any speed. I have noticed that it goes away it i slighty apply the brakes to simulate a load or strain on the tranny. I first thought it WAS the tranny, pump, or torque converter but a tranny shop I know says its the motor! Hey any help is alot more than what I got now, so if anyone can help please do! As far as qualitifed motor shops around here its hit or miss thats why I turned to you guys and gals!!!!!!!
