Gnarly piston slap
When I am driving my ranger it sounds like its pinging but I think its just piston slap. It hapens whenever I am in 2nd 3rd or 4th gear and even 5th. I have tried premium and it doesnt help. Whats going on? I was going up a hill and I lugged it up the hill and it went away... haha

which engine? any PCM codes?
with quality oil, Fords are not know for piston slap
many of the Ranger/Explorer engines love to ping/predetonate though, usually carbon buildup in combustion chamber

How does the running temp of the engine effect the noise? Piston slap is worse when cold, since metal parts have larger tollerance before expansion. I'm not saying it isn't slap, but predetonation is a very good possibility as well. Plus top-end noise doesn't necessarily need a load to emerge, you will hear it at idle when cold, and at certain rpm ranges as well. If fuel quality doesn't effect the noise you may be right, but lets not jump to conclusions.
