As Jimbo302 said, the deck is taller on a 351W. If yu ook at a 302, the deck will be even with the water pump. On a 351W, the deck is about 1" taller than the 302.
The Windsor engine weighs about 510 lbs in factory trim compared to the 460 lbs of the small block 289/302. The 351 version of the Windsor added approx. 1/2" to the deck height of the small block . The easiest way to spot a 351W Block is to notice the difference in height between the intake gasket surface and the top of the timing cover at the front of the block. I can get three fingers between the water neck on the intake and the timing cover on a 351W and only two on a 289/302. The 351 uses a longer connecting rods than the 289/302, therefore the reason for the taller deck height. This in effect reduces excessive piston side loads. The 351 Windsor's deck height is 9.480" for (1969/70) and 9.503" for (1971/96).which is the same as the 400M, compared to the small blocks 9.2" deck height.
