After spending most of the morning at my local ford dealer I learned one thing.
With all the computers in the truck and in the shop, it all comes down to one thing.
A “WAG” (wild *** guess).
We did a cylinder contribution test; found that # 6 cylinder is giving me the problem.
Plug the “computer” back in and look for codes. Everything looks like I have an injector
going out (if not out altogether). We find a code P1298 “replace IDM” ($875 part $275 labor) I’m told “this may or may not work, you might still need injectors ($320 per + labor)
I asked “if we replace the IDM and that’s not the problem then what? Am I out $1150”?
Sorry to vent to all of you, has anyone ever run into this problem?
I’m thinking about trying fixing the # 6 injector and if that’s not it then replace the IDM.
(If you have a ’99 PSD don’t pay $275 labor having them fix it. Take the black plastic off around the inside of the drivers side front wheel well and look up. It will take you about 10 – 15 minutes to do this whole replacement)
I would think that if you took it in and told them to fix it then they would be
responsible for any misdiagnosise. After all thats why you paid them and didn't
do it yourself.Otherwise I'd contact your attonney general and file a fraud complaint.
i have a 99 and am going through the same thing i took a idm off my other truck and #4 still dosent fire till truck warms up. but when warm cyl contr test shows all fine.i have 5 7.3 trucks the only time i got idm code was when i had bad harness to injector and even then i got a high to low circuit open. i would change the injector first.
Do not allow the stealer to overlook the one thing that connects the IDM to the injectors. A bad/burned injector wiring harness can make either component look bad.
Plus the harness costs less than a single injector.
99PSD;
I used my own tester (snap-on), a friends tester (snap-on), and I had ford do it. They charged me
$50 to put their tester on. They had to eat the labor (side bet) because
they told me my tester was a piece of crap and I wold only get a true look at
my problem with a quality tester, "not a cheep piece of crap like that". I thought that was a good deal.
Cheers
