ok guys i know there are many different part numbers for IDMs and ford says they aren't interchangeable but i have first hand experience that they are. i don't know if anybody has tried this or not so if you already know this don't beat me up about it. at work i have an 02 with numerous codes between 1271and 1278 high to low side open (IDM code referring to each cyclinder) none at the same time and none with any ryhme or reason. so i tested the wiring and injectors and it all pointed to the IDM which was just replaced december 1 by the dealer after it failed. the truck runs fine but continued to throw codes
the wires were tested for short and excess resistance and wiggle tested for broken wires then i load tested them for excess amp draw and still not problems found. then for the fun of it swapped 1 bank of injector coils with coils from a core engine we have still throwing codes so the IDM is definatly suspect.
so here is the end of the story. i took i the idm out of my 95 with dread coming over me that i might blow mine up or hurt the other truck more i plugged it in buzz tested started it and drove it for about 20 miles. no problems codes gone now the dealer has sent us a new IDM and the truck should now be fixed!!!
so now there is a guy on ebay selling IDM new in box from ford for $200 buy it now. we asked him about the fitment since he states that they fit 94.5 to 2003.5 including the 6.0 and he say s they work. a number of shops he deals with replace all years with the idm and have no problems.
so long story short an idm is an idm near as i can tell!!!
so i did some more looking around at dipaco.com and they list 2 idm 94.5 to 98 and then 99 to 2003. so they are probably different but will work. maybe somebody who knows more can tell us what the difference is. but the one from my 95 worked in the 02. each had the correct number idm in it to start with.
i think the only reason theres differnt numbers is the case it comes in. i thought the split shot idm put out more power but i was never able to confirm that. ive got a idm out of an 03 7.3 in my 97 that ive modified and it works great
the idm mods have been made similar to the "joe servo" mod to increase the the output voltage from 115VDC to 140VDC get a faster more stable injector signal
yeah i guess i have heard of those mods. the nice part about the newer idm fitting our truck is that if you ahve to buy from the dealer they are $200 cheaper. but there are mcuh better places to buy idms than the dealer!
it definately helped my truck, but im not running stock injectors. i dont know what the differnce would be on stock injectors but i have heard some guys say it made more power then some guys didnt really notice. i guess it depends on how strong your idm/injectors are
great thinks. i have a new engine with 200hp stage 5 inj 2mil over valves with the high rev cam, intercooled with the new ballbering turbo 4"down pipe and exhaust {had to use sledge hamer to get to fit lol} intake with edge evolution programer. droped compression 1pt and run just at 35-40lbs of boost. its fun to drive but i keep looseing idms 4 so far and egts are out the roof. i replaced all harmess and sensors but i dont help any ideas also where do i go to get the idm you have? thanks for the fast replies and the help.
