Just bought a 1994 F53 460 EFI motorhome and I am looking to tune it up.
I'm looking for some general specs and preferences for this engine; oil capacity, recommended oil weight, synthetic or blend?
Plugs? Anyone getter any better performance out of platinum or dbl platinum plugs? I am happy with platiniums I run in my 302 (5L).
My experience with my 94 460 is that the standard non platinum plugs look like heck after 35K miles. They also are a beach to remove. I think next time I will try some platinums and preferably use something with a chrome or stainless(do they make that?) thread. In any case use some antisieze since I think with high heat, the plugs get stuck pretty good. I tow 8,000# and am pretty sure things get hot under the hood, although coolant temps are fine.
I think if I can get a thread chaser in there, I will do that next time before putting new plugs in.
I use Valvoline 10W30 synthetic, 6 quarts with new filter.
Although I prefer to run Mobil 1 15W50 for those hot, summer towing runs I would definetly recommend (as does our dealership) using the Ford FL1-HP oil filters on 460's. High capacity, higher pressures and built for racing engines. The 460 delivers a lot of pressure, especially on start up with a cold engine.
