Someone posted some engine weights for Windsors, 351Cs, 351M/400, and 429/460 engines. I have been searching, but cannot find it.
My purpose is to estimate the weight of my 400 with CHI Aluminum heads (28lbs ea), Aluminum Intake, Water Pump, and Aluminum Pulleys and compare that to weights for stock Windsors, Clevelands, and 385 series motors, and even the venerable FE motors.
If the motor is out you could put it in a truck and get it weighed at a local scrap yard or a sand and gravel plant. you'd have to go back to get a empty weight though.
The chart could be more complete... it shows the Cleveland/335 series @ 550. Where as I recall reading here the 400 comes it at 575, which sounds about right to me.
So if I knock off 60 lbs for 2 heads 20 lbs for the Intake manifold 5 lbs for the water pump and 5 lbs for the pulleys, that comes to 90 lbs. 575 less 90 is 485 lbs. That puts the final weight of my 400 between a stock 302 and a stock Boss 302. That is pretty good when you figure that the torque and horsepower compare favorably to many 429/460 motors.
You talk about aluminum heads-I didnt know there were any available for the 400-are they a direct replacement or some exotic race part that will require some adaptation. Where can I find info on these???
Yes, there are aluminum heads available for a 400. They are not an exotic race part, but they do require some adaptation, since they are 351C heads. They are also expensive, but not out of sight. Here is the link:
It said 575 pounds and referenced "Hot Rod Ford High Performance 1985" as the source for the weight.
Hope that helps...seems to concur with the above post. I think you are on track with 575 for starters. That factory intake manifold weighed a ton! I was shocked at the weight difference between OEM and my Edelbrock. I suppose aluminum heads are just as shocking in comparison - maybe someday I'll get some.
The Pavtek heads are CHI heads and require adapter plates and end spacers for use on a 400 block. I am using the CHI heads which I purchased directly from CHI. The AFD heads may be compatible with a 400 intake manifold, but I would question the manufacturer about that and the additional charges for any adapters before ordering.
