I have a 390 with a 600 edelbrock and today I noticed there seemed to be a loud whistle coming from the carb. I have checked the vacume lines but nothing. Sounds if it is coming from the left side of the carb and I only hear it when i let off the throttle, any other time it runs normal. Any ideas?
Thanks
Intake manifold vacuum is the highest when you close the throttle with still high rpm’s. It appears as though you may have a vacuum leak that with the higher vacuum levels under those certain conditions it causes it to whistle.
Use some carb cleaner with the engine idling and sway it around the carb in the area where you think the whistle is coming from. A change in the rpm indicates you have a vacuum leak. You should be able to narrow down exactly where it is coming from. It may be that the hold down nuts are loose or there is a vacuum hose split. There are a number of ways in which it can leak.
