New life in a '53

I am new here to this forum and aswell to this hobby. I wanted to know what would I have to due to replace the 215 inline six with a flathead or 302 ( just keeping my options open here).

Any info about would be helpful.

Quiksilver,
On my 55 I put in a bolt in cross member that my 302 bolted right up to, you can find them in most hot rod mags or custom classic trucks or classic truck magazines.

272, 292, 312, 289, 302,351. They're all good. Just stay with Ford. I'm very happy with my 289 in the 54. Good luck, John

Thing of the 302 or the 351. Also if I did go with the 351 would I have to make the drive shaft shorter and could I still use the old rear end it has I think a 8.8 with 3.9.1 gears??

Jag Red 54 I will not put in a chevy in there, I have see it done, it look;s "very lame!!"

PS: If you have a copy the new (July 04) CUSTOM CLASSIC TRUCKS look @ page no# 88 pic no: 5 and that is what I would like have or something like it and having it look old school lol!

Old Skule is Good

I have a 5.0L/AOD from an '86 Lincoln Mk.VII with an 8.8 & 11" drums from an '85 Country Squire out back.

Seems to work real well with lots of room to spare! You can get bolt in tranny mounts as well. You may get lucky as I did and have the drive shaft from your donor vehicle bolt in with the help of a spacer or you may have to shorten your shaft and have it rebalanced.

The 5.0L is the same block as the 302 with the carburator swapped out in favour of fuel injection... see the FTE Forum on that subject for discussions of pro's & con's of the two fuel delivery systems.
... and have fun with your project

I have been mulling over the same engine swap (302/AOD into a '53). Will a 302 from a car (LTD,etc) work, or will the oil pan hit the axle. I have heard you must use a rear sump oil pan. Is that true?

If that, dose work I know where I can get a late 80’s Ford Crow Vic LTD, for about 750.00 with 302, EFI but I would have to rebuild the engine due to that it has been sitting for about six to seven years. I don’t know if that would be good for an engine or transmission by sitting that long and not be running at all!! Pulse it is my dad's aunt’s car, she does not drive it at all any more I would like to put it to some good use and not having it go to waste. If you know what I mean? <O</O

351 is about the same size as the 302 except for being a little wider and taller then the 302. The transmissions can vary, the C4 is shorter than the C6. In most cases the drive shaft needs to be altered unless you can find one to fit from a donor vehicle. Not a big deal to change the length of the drive shaft and not that expensive in most cases.

Hey guys,

I have a 1987 5.0L and AOD out of a Crown Victoria. It is EFI the speed density type not Mass Air like on the 5.0 Mustang. It gets 22 MPG. Thus far I have been driven to Atlanta and the Nationals last week from my home base in Nashville.

Don, nice truck (the '55 has the best grille!)

Are you running the original guage cluster? How did you hook the tranny to the speedo?
