What are you guys charging to haul. I was considering hauling for hire with a F350 6.0 I would be hauling livestock or horses. Do you normally charge by the loaded mile or total mileage? Diesel and motel extra? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
Almost always by the loaded mile on trailers or cargo, per car on car haulers, but I'm not sure about livestock. Are you planning on hauling locally or cross country? I ask because if you are going cross country for hire, there is lots more you will have to deal with regulation wise.

I have considered the regulations that will apply. This would be a one time thing for a friend but I have no idea what to charge. Its 1000 miles one way.
id call around and see what the pros charge and then undercut them by 10-25% and youll do ok ( i always charge extra for expenses like phone, lodging and anything else that could be concieved as billable)
$250 for fuel ( (1000 miles/8 mpg) * $2 a gallon) plus $0.31 a mile for depreciation (.31x1000) = $560 just to cover costs one way. Just in basic cost round trip $500 gas.
For a friend, if he was coming with me, I would say bring your credit card for the gas and food, and leave it at that.
I thought major companies didn't charge for food, lodging, etc. At least that's how they pay their drivers. You should take all your foreseen expenses and average them in to come up with a flat-rate MPG.
You are right, the major companies dont charge lodging, food, depreciation, etc. Almost all of the hotshot drivers I know are owner operators leased out to a company. I am leased to a company now hauling horse and stock trailers part time, and my food, lodging, upkeep on my truck, etc. is all my responsibility. Some companies may pay their drivers a per diem, but I dont know of any that do, and anyway, it probably doesnt cover the entire cost of a trip as far as lodging and eats are concerned. I think rebocardo's mileage estimate is a bit low, at least from what I hear the 6.0 PSD guys bragging about. Hell, I get 9 pulling a set of double trailers (goosneck and a bumper pull) with my '99 V10, so I KNOW you are bound to get better than that, and you'll be empty coming home, wont you?

Ya, my parents pull a fifth wheel with an F350 7.3 PSD dually 4x2 that maxes out the GCWR and they get 14 MPG when towing. Maybe that mileage was for a V10.
I do think it's funny that some of the companies say that "diesel is a must." So much for the old gas vs diesel debate!
I agree with Rebocardo about just charging your friend for fuel and food (well, I'd want some good beer out of the deal too, once we got to the destination ). If the guy is really a friend, I don't believe in making money off friends. If they want to pay extra, that's nice . I like helping friends and it usually comes back to me in the end too. Plus, I like to travel to new places just for the adventure of it, and towing can be fun too (nice to see how the truck does).
