A noobie should start out with a come-a-long as their first winch anyway. If they plan on spending a lot of time wheeling, they will be having p'oed G-friends/wife so they better be good at hand jobs anyway.

You're killing me!!! If you have a locker you won't be getting stuck in 90% of the places you will with an open diff and winch. True, this means you'll probably be stupid and drive into some really scary stuff but that's what it's all about. A winch without a locker is like wearing a helmet on a 30cc bike. Sure, it's gonna protect your noggin but how hard can you smack it in the first place???
well maybe it's just my stupidity, but i have been stuck alot of places where a locker wouldn't have gotten me out of. i understand your guys points, i just hate working harder than you have to on something that could be easy. even with a winch it can be hard work.
a locker will get you through more but then you will be more confident and try deeper holes. a locker won't always get you out.
on the other hand, a winch (unless it's a crapper like mine (screw Ramsey)) it is garaunteed 99% of the time to get you out....IF you have something to winch to (tree or other truck)
exactly... by the way, i am not saying don't get a locker, lockers are great and god knows i need one, i'm just saying that if money is tight, i would be more worried about getting my rig home everyday than what i think i could get through.
Yeah go with the winch thats what i am doing. a buddy cant always pull you out. i got stuck yesterday and i couldnt find anyone to pull me out so i had to get a ride about 5 miles to pick up a friend of the familys jeep to pull myself out. But i was in a 2 wheel drive pickup with goodyear wrangler A/Ts.
lol, so does anybody have a suggestion for a good all around winch? I will spend what i need to, because i dont believe in buying something cheap first and wish you would of saved up for the one you actually wanted.
i am loving my milemarker e9000. my only regret is not getting the 12000lb one. although i haven't had my 9000 stop pulling yet. defanatly happy with it, and the money i saved.
im all for a locker, getting stuck ain't that terrible as long as you went farther than the chebbie guys and theres still someone there to pull you out, but you can go so much farther with a locker, plus there are more ways to get unstuck than a winch, i would say carry a shovel, some wood,(i like the come-a-long idea, we have a big one that is very useful) and you should be set.
also, i found this sight by a blind chance some time back, now im 17 and im on it more than any onther sight that i know of! and for a good reason too,
shoot cutts, i could see you trying to put boggers on a civic- sawzall time!
