Winch?
I am wanting to put a winch on my truck. I will probably go Electric, that way the engine doesn't have to be running. I will most likely add a second battery because of this. My question is how much would a winch drop the front end. I have a 1974 F-250 4x4 Highboy with a 360. Everything is pretty much stock.
These are the winches that I am looking:
-Warn M12000 Self-Recovery Winch (136 lb weight) - Price Unknown
-Warn XD9000i Self-Recovery Winch (85 lb weight) - Price Unknown
-Superwinch Husky 10,000 lb (113 lb weight) - Price Unknown
-Pierce 12,500 lb 12 Volt Winches (unknown weight) - $660
Those are the four winches that I am primarily looking at. Does anyone have any other electric suggestions?
Does anyone know of any manufacturers of front bumpers for winches?
For those of you who have already added a winch, what winch did you choose and how much did your front end sag?

Based on the weight of your truck, I'd go for the 10,000+ ones. I've never heard of the Pierce 12,500 lb but the price sure looks good! The front wont sage much if at all. I have the Warn front wench bumber that came with my truck, it looks great and seems strong. You might have to search a while to find a good bumper for that truck, most places only carry new stuff and avoid the old Fords like they never exisited. The warn as a new High Speed setup and they have a great rep.

I haven't had much luck finding too many winch mounts for our trucks. I have a 78 F-150 4x4. I personally like a more subtle mount, something like Warn's Combo Kit, which is like a bull bar setup with winch mount. The winch in the url that 85351ho put up is monstrous, which is cool if that's what you are going for. It's just a little too much bumper for me =). I have a pretty heavy duty bull bar setup on my truck which I am going to have custom welded into a winch mount soon. I have only been hearing great things about the Warn XD9000i but am also considering the new high speed HS9500i. Decisions decisions.

I've had two of the winches that you talked about the M12000 and 9000i by Warn. Both of the winches have been good but by not covering the 12000 I had to send it to warn twice for repair (what happens when water gets in them). My only complant about them is the line speed, I have also had the Warn 8000#, the tall one and it pulls fast compared to the other two.
As for batterys if at all possable leave your truck running even with two batterys. I got the 9000i because it was made for working off one battery and will, but unless you want to be replacing batterys about every 18 months (what I had to do on my truck with the 12000 which, it was a disel with two batterys) you should leave the truck running and the first time you do it without the thuck running you will find out how good of battery you have.
Bumpers I've had have all been Warn clasic. I like the classic for the strength but I did beef mine up from stock, this helps when you need to but up aginst a tree to keep the truck from skidding if you can't ancor the back. Also for this reason I like the painted bumper, easy to touch up and no chrome to rust. I put the bumper off my '89 on to my '77 with minor mods, cut off where the bumper wraps around and change the mounting brackets underneath and $125.00 at a custom welding shop. I also have a friend that has a '75 that he made a custom set up that looks like a push bar has wide as the frame. He made the templeats from cardboard and then cut the steel, welded tabs using the bumper bolts to hold it on and went under to the frame then welded in a winch plate to connect the two side plates. After this he added some tubing to the top and bottom, tabs for two lights and tow hooks, it looks as good has anything you could buy for a truck.
Hope this helps

Winch?
I was just wondering if anyone has just put a reciever on the front of their Ford? I would like a winch, but i don't want it there all of the time. I was thinking about just making mounting plate with a receiver hitch so that i could put it on the front or the back. With proper bolts or welding wouldn't this be stout enough? Thanks
