If you wheel alone a lot-definitely go with the winch. otherwise it' s kinda more fun to build your truck up gradually and feel the improvements working for you as you do them.Plus considering your age,and if you wheel with other trucks, it'll be a good learning experience getting unstuck without a winch-cooler stories to tell too.
If you are new to 4 wheeling go with a locker. Think about this. With a winch you are going to throw yourself into situations where a winch will get you out before you learn to apply skill. With a locker you will learn to drive and get yourself through without getting stuck. Plus when you get stuck with a locker versus an open diff, the stories and the pictures should be better.
I'm with Ivan on this. You will use the locker 1000x more than a winch. Plus, you'll have an excuse not to pull chevies out . . .
screw that.....i live for pulling chevy's out. hell i would have a winch on the front of a honda civic (if i had one) just to pull them out!

i had one in the rear but when I got my IROK's i wanted to save them for as long as possible so i got a l/s 4.10. also when i got the D60 it had a 4.10 gear set so i had to get new gears anyways. Now i am just locked up front. when i go to bogs though i throw the ole welded beast back in the rear but that happens very lil!

exactly! plus how embarressing would it be for them to go back to their buddies and say
"Ya dude, I had to get pulled out by a Honda Civic....the same one that smoked me at the light the other day! He must be packing cause he had a chrome tip hanging out the rear and cool green lights on the hood!"
If money is an issue (when isn't it?) I'd say buy a winch and then spool the axle(s). I picked my 9" spool up at a local race shop. Got it used for $10. Threw it in an haven't had a second thought. You just have to drive a bit more aggressively when it's dry and a helluva lot less aggressively when its wet (have a rolled lip on a wheel to testify to that).
tough ?.....I think the locker is the way to go....more bang for the buck...will improve your off road ability tons and you will have more fun with it....using a winch is never fun...unless of course you're pulling out chevies.
