Which first, a locker or winch?

I have a 62 4x4 ford. I have some new 31'' mud terrains sxt's. I have a ford 9in rear end. I would like to know what i should look at getting first. I have decided, as far as lockers go, to go with the detroit ones. As for winches, i have looked at superwinch and warn. I would like to know which one would benifit me when i need it most.

i would go with a winch, you can still get stuck with a locker that only a winch or another truck could get you out of.

It depends on what you are doing.. If you are doing a lot of mud running now, I'd go with a winch, because you are more likely to get stuck the more you 4wheel. If you only 4 wheel on occassion, I'd go with a locker, that way it'll give you a helping hand enough where you won't need a winch, if you all careful. I am going with lockers b4 the winch... the winch give you a nice safety feature if you can't do the buddy system. (ie a buddy has a big-a%3 truck that can pull you out..

It is all subjective, some guys on here (Pro) doesn't run one at all, but he has 44s and a 460, locked front and rear.

I would look at warn and milemarker.. everyone around here hates ramsey, for good reasons. don't know much about superwinches though..

I'd go with a good selectable locker or a "lunch box" until I could get aelectable on a DD that rolls up some miles.

alright guys thanks. I will go with the winch first, as thats what i was thinking of anways. I got in a minor wreck a month ago and bent up the bumper into the fender. I was going to make a new heavy duty bumper with a winch mount. Thanks for all the quick responses.

I would go with the locker first. You can always call a buddy to pull you out if you're stuck and dont have a winch, but a locker, good tires aired down, and a driver who knows how to drive can go a long way to avoid getting stuck in the first place.

the thing about saying "i'll just get a buddy with his truck to pull me out" is that often you are stuck in places you can't get another truck to pull you out of. happens to me all the time, the winch is the only thing that ever saves my butt.

I'll be the sore loser that disagrees with everyone here ('cept for Socal) but IMO I would go with a locker first. Personally I'd rather have a more capable offroad truck than a truck that doesn't drive well offroad but has good recovery gear. I'm not saying winches aren't great and won't be a major benefit but half the places you'll need to winch out of you wouldn't be stuck in to begin with if you had a locker. Build your truck to not get stuck in the first place. If you go then you know how to use a shovel and bribe friends.
