I have been reading a lot about the bypass filter for the oil. I am very interested and I know some of you all are using it. Give me the good the bad and the ugly on them. Are they really as good as they sound? How often do you send in oil samples to test it? How long do you all go between oil changes with it? How many more Quarts of oil do you need to add with it? How hard is it to change the bypass filter and how often?
I've been considering adding a bypass filter myself. If I do add one I am going to continue to change my oil at the same interval. I'm just interested in longevity, not extending oil drain intervals. The best setup I've seen so far is by Oil Guard (one of our sponsors). I'm probably going to buy one this summer.
That is my main concern too is longevity, I change my oil every 3000 miles but if I can push it out to the recommended 5000 (buy the owners manuel) and feel comforted doing it with the bypass. Then it would pay for itself. I agree the Oil Guard does look the best. I just want to hear from those who use it if it is really doing what it claims.
Have you checked out any of the toilet paper filters like Frantz? I haven't quite made up my mind on them yet. The price of the filter sure seems good though.
I installed the Oil Guard for filtration purposes only and not to extend oil change intervals. The Oil Guard filter is specifically designed to filter to 1 micron. The filter is a spun material meant for oil fitration, not a roll of Brawny.
Personally, if you're going for extended oil changes, (3000 miles +) I would consider synthetic oil with the Oil Guard or other bypass systems.
The engine on my PSD gets pretty loud and performance drops off as I exceed the 3000 mile mark.
I can't believe the PSD owners that claim to run their oil for 10's of thousands of miles between oil changes using synthetics and a bypass. Their claims are stated like it is some proud badge of honor because they saved a couple hundred dollars on oil changes. One thing the bypass oil systems and synthetics don't do is filter any liquid contaminants from your oil. Diesel fuel, coolant, etc. can contaminate your oil and reduce it's effectiveness and pass right through the filter. But, wow....they saved a few bucks!
I also have the oil guard on my truck. As heatstroked said it is an element not a roll of toilet/paper towels, which is why i bought it. I am very pleased with the added filtration and how clean the oil stays. I do run synthetic but I change it every 5000 miles.

I totally agree. The real reason a bypass system should be used is to extend the life of the engine. Extending oil drain intervals only negates the benefits of having a bypass filter.
I have learned some info I think . Any way I have decided to go with the bypass filter in the furure. I will stick with my regular oil change intervals still at 3000 to 3500 miles based on my time availability that week. As I plan on keeping this truck a veeeerrrrrrry long time. Thanks for the info guys. And Heatsroked thanks for the help the other day. Things are great so far. I will be making a small towing venture this weekend we'll see how she does. No hills on this trip but I should be able to get a feel for it. Thanks a lot!!!!!!
