Pyrometer - pre or post turbo?

Hey all,
Recently purchased an 01 F-250 Crew Cab (with the diesel of course). First diesel, and I love it! Anyway, I want to put in a pyrometer, (likely boost gauge too) but where to should it go, before or after the turbo. I realize this thread prolly has been done to death, but I am stumped (and the search tool is busted). Some say you want the pyrometer before the turbo, some say after. It seems to me that you would want to read the turbo inlet temperature since that would be the hottest (ere on the safe side, right?) Then again, if the pyrometer falls apart or something it could get sucked into the turbo and destroy the impeller, so maybe you want it after. Whats the deal? Where have you folks installed your pyrometers? I am confused.

Pyrometer - pre or post turbo?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Mar-02 AT 04:13 PM (EST)]My thermocouple is mounted pre-turbo for the reason that you stated, that's the hottest exhaust. You can look at my pics for the pre-turbo clamp-on thermocouple mount. Secondly, I have never heard of the thermocouple breaking off in the exhaust stream. You don't want to shut down the engine until the pyro reads 300*F or lower. You also don't want to run any higher than 1250*F sustained or you will start to melt $$$ parts.

Pyrometer - pre or post turbo?

I have my 3 gauges. They are VDO Vision with sensors. Nothing installed yet! The transmission gauge is simple, just put the sensor in place of the transmission drain plug with the adapter. My pyro sensor is a "screw in" type that would go in the exhust stream. Pre turbo would be the best place but screw it in where? Next is the boost pressure but where do you pick up the "port" to connect the pressure hose to after the inter cooler?. I have a 2000 PSD..Thanks Richard

For the screw in type you have to drill and tap the exhaust manifold. Or have a bung welded to the inlet pipe to the turbo.

Thanks Les, I looked at your pictures, Very Nice! Looks like you have a "clamp on" sensor on one input to the turbo? Looking at my PSD I see the 2 inputs to the turbo from each manifold going to the back of the turbo. Might be able to put a clamp on sensor there but that only sees the output from one manifold.

Same type of a problem finding a location on the output of the intercooler to sample to turbo pressure. May have to change sensors or braze fittings into the exhaust output of the turbo and outlet from the intercooler.

I will call Egauges where I got them from and have a chat. I will post results...Richard

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Mar-02 AT 08:50 PM (EST)]newtruck,
You only need to sample one bank of cylinders since a properly running engine will burn essentually the same. There is a rubber hose about 1/4" i.d. running from the front of the "Y" manifold that you can tap for the boost gauge. You will see the rubber hose going to the passenger side near the heater core box. Yes, my thermocouple is a clamp-on, its been on for a year with NO problems.
