I'm thinking about diving into the winch thing for my '95 F150 4WD, focusing mostly on Mile Marker 8,000 & 9,000 lb. electric and hydraulic units. I expect this will be light duty with an occasional bear of a pull. Mostly logging related work after my real job is done for the day.
I'm also at ground zero / newbie status when it comes to mounting; all I've figured out is that the bumper comes off and you deal with the subframe. I'm tempted to go for an aftermarket winch bumper, but want to keep this on the right side of a thousand bucks. Any ideas? Am I nuts? (Well, OK; we already know the answer to that one...)
pto winches run off the transfer case, more work to install but uses the engine for power. used one on my old truck for pulling logs for fire wood (100 cords yr) and had no problems with it, just broke cables now and then. You could build your own bumper from diamond decking- time, welder and some material. mine came out ok, not the greatest looking but it was funtional and never broke.
I mounted a winch to a receiver hitch so I can use it on the front or back of my jeep, or other vehicles. I have a receiver on the front of my trailer so I can winch stuff onto the trailer. Storing it when not in use is one downside.
I got the cheap ramsey 8000 for $399, some ****** blocks, straps and D-rings. I have not been dissappointed with the power. Had it about 5 years.
