Fuel screen, another dead horse.

I cleaned the fuel screen that is in the filter housing and found a lot of black gook in it. My uneducated guess is, this is a return line and would have no effect on preformance. I hope someone can tell me I'm wrong.
Thanks..

The fuel screen goes directly into the fuel regulator. A dirty screen will negatively effect performance. Don't worry about the crud in there, just make a habit of cleaning it every time you change the fuel filter.

BTW, the black gook is usually a sign that the injector o-rings are on the way out. Keep an eye out for oil consumption.

Thanks John.....I hope that was the resaon for my loss of power. It will be a while before I get the chance to pull the trailer to be sure but if that was the reason, four Q-Tips were sure a cheap fix.

I have changed my fuel filter before but have never seen a screen. Where is it? also the injectors are after the filter, how could injector "O" rings going bad cause black deposits in the fuel?

With the fuel bowl lid removed, it is inside the hole to the top right as you're facing the engine.

Added question, I tried to remove the old filter but, I can not separate the filter from the lid, what is the technique you to separate the lid from the old filter? Also, is there a special tool used to remove the screen filter? Thanks for the reply.

You may have an aftermarket filter that comes with the lid attached. It's not a big deal, but you need ot make sure and buy replacement filters that come with the lid mounted. Most of them come without. The filter should easily seperate from the lid.

This is a sign, at least with the 1997 and older 7.3's, that the o-rings are failing. Pieces of the o-rings makes their way into the fuel system. I don't know if this happens with the 1999+ 7.3's because the fuel system is different.

Black deposits could be oil. Which if you had an o-ring on its way out the oil and fuel would mix and eventually end up in your fuel tank and your fuel filter. There are return lines on each head.

So, if there was oil getting in the fuel, would that cause the fuel filter to turn dark brown after a few thousand miles? I don't add any oil between changes. How much of a problem is it to replace the O rings. My '97 only has 53,000 miles on it but still, it's 7 yrs. old.

Dark brown is from fuel and is normal. A black or really dark filter is from oil. If your fuel filter is brown don't worry about it.

I always thought that too, turns out that whatever the gunk is that grows in diesel fuel will do it too. I changed the fuel filter this morning and after 15,000 is was just a nice diesel fuel yellow, no brown, black or anything else.

The only difference between today and every other filter change (which has always been a very dark brown) was that Lately I have been running Power Service at nearly triple the dosage on the bottle..nearly 30oz. per fillup. I also noticed the bottom of the seperator bowl bowl on my primary fiter was crystal clear, previously it would build up about 1/4" of a brownish crud every 6-8000 and would need drained off as well.

The only conclusion I can draw from this is that I got a bad batch of fuel very early in this trucks life, and what ever fungus, bacteria, or whatever it is just kept growing and reproducing until I ran a sufficient amount of biocide through it to kill it all.

After reading that I'm going to buy some biocide. I can usually see clearly to the bottom of the fuel bowl though.

When I started this fuel screen thread, a topic that has been covered many times, I thought I would get a couple replies at the most, but it has turned into a very informative subject . It's biocide for me too. ......Thanks guys.
