Does Size Really Matter?
Sorry about the title I just couldn't resist.
Well, no it doesnt.
There are different theories on this. In a really dirty motor, the bigger filter would be of an advantage since it would not clog up as fast. However, the standard FL-1A or equivalent will not clog for a good long time.
Usually filters dont filter as best as they can until they get a few thousand on 'em anyway. This is because the wear particles, dirt, or whatever it catches makes the passages through the media effectively smaller, thereby catching smaller particles. The larger filter wont do this as quick as a smaller one.
On the other side, one could say that the particles would be distributed more since a larger filter will allow you to run a greater amount of oil. The oil will stay slightly cooler, and wear on the engine will be *slightly* reduced that way. Also, the larger filter will allow oil to pass through it more easily, better lubricating the engine and reducing wear that way.
So I think it's a toss-up. Do what your gut tells you. As for me, I'm going down to Napa to get some #1773's.
