um?, you should preheat a manifold or any cast peice for that matter before welding, (its stronger in the end) then you tig it with a rod just for cast iron, then it must cool SLOWLY, the weld shop i work at dose cast work alot, but it gets expensive and its never a guarentee, ive seen some stuff go into the cooling can, (a trash can with a special insulation and another can within) to cool it slowly and when it comes out its got another crack from the intense heat of welding, the best fix is to replace it with a new one, there kinda expensive, but thats what i did when mine on my 351w broke in two, for 90 bucks it was gonna cost more to have it welded and risk it not working again.
There are 2 methods to welding cast. You just explained the first one and the cold method is the second one.I have welded on quite a few cast products my self, and used both methods. When I use the COLD method I don't wind up chasing as many cracks ,it seems. The special insulation you are talking about is probably vermiculite, the stuff is light as a feather, can withstand direct contact with flame, and insulates for a very long time. And best of all you can purchase this little item at a gardening center, because it is also used in flower beds.
yup thats the stuff, i didnt realize the cold method was a method, i was told you did it by heating it up and that was the proper way, but im sure its 6 one way half a dozen the other.
