I was wondering if there is a good intake manifold to use on a 300 and what year truck is it from? I have 4 300s here and not a good manifold on any of them
You mean the lower intake ? All the later ones for Efi are aluminum & the ears that the bolts contact will break if the bolts get tightened too much or if the proper torque sequence isnt followed . Im not sure when Ford started using the aluminum ones , whether it was when the 300 became Efi or before that . If you have a carb engine you may find an old cast iron one in a junk yard . Someone may sell new cast iron ones but I honestly couldnt tell you where to look .
that is the problem I am the junkyard and I figgure one of those fords out there in the yard has to have a good manifold right? so what I am looking for is one for a carburated truck that won't crack. I am guessing this is a problem with them. Or is it they have all just been worked on by some dip that over tightens them?
Yeah, to much torque will crack the ears, as well as mismatched pairs. After so many miles the head and manifold start to slightly warp - this warping puts extra stress on those ears or tabs and they crack. Sometimes folks have one that cracks, then they put a new (or used) one on and fail to see how well the ports line up (planar). I have to swap out the manifolds on my truck for the emission designed ones ('79). I bought a new exhaust and found a used intake at a junk yard. I bolted them up on a granite table and both are rather flat, but just in case I'm having them machined anyway. At the same time it's good to have the head machined where the manifolds mate on. I'd check Ebay motors, there was one up for auction that was NOS. It's not there anymore, but I bet the seller will have another come up soon. Yeah, they are hard to come by, but the dealer has them.
That lower one is pricey considering its made of aluminum , $213 From Ford . The torque specs for them are only 22 to 32 Ft Lbs , Not very much . I wouldnt go beyond 25 Ft Lbs .
i have an intake for my 300 that I took off to put on a 4bbl carb and all that little stuff. I'll gie it to ya for, ~$65 plus shipping. E-mail me at wildjon3006(No Email Addresses In Posts!) The intake is in very good condition, no cracks.
Hello:
I put the intake and exhaust manifold of my old 240(66 F100)on my new 300, they bolt up fine. Later the exhaust manif cracked and I bought one from Payne Salvage,AZ, it turned out for early 80 model. The mating surfaces between the tow manifolds (where the gasket goes) was not flushed. I had a hell of sanding done just to make'm flat, used double gasket, Hi temp sealant to stop any leak, done alot of sanding to make the mount bolts align, still leaks. I took the whole manifold and weld them at the area of the gasket and it was alot better. Meanwhile I bought both manifolds (came as one piece bolted together) from a salvage yard at SD for $200 including shipping. So when buying either manifolds make sure they are the same year. Thanks.
