cracked manifold

Is it possible to weld the crack on a cracked exhaust manifold to seal it up while it is on the truck?

manifolds are usually cast iron but i couldn't believe you could weld it back up.just get a new one and quit trying to wash your engine after you came from a long *** trip

I have rods for my stick welder that would do it, but I don't think it would be a permanent fix. Cracks are the perfect excuse to get a header.

Yes, it is possible. It probably will not last though. If this is a newer vehicle, you would have to make sure the battery is disconnected so you dont have a surge, and ruin your electronic components. Like stated previous, this is only a temporary fix. What is the motor in question?

I was thinking of getting some cheaper shorty's...maybe those summit ones? I've read they don't always work with the existing Y Pipe. I don't really care about having headers, just want to get rid of the exhaust leak sound from the cracked manifold.

I would stay away with summit products altogether. They are chosen on price only, and we all know what kind of quality price normally dictates . The cheapest alternative I can think of is ebay. I know there is one guy on there who sells a ton of cheap replacement manifolds. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...476919466&rd=1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...477014097&rd=1 Just an idea.

I happen to believe that summit is way overpriced, but people must be paying otherwise they wouldn't still be around. They are a good source when no one else has it and you need it.

you can braze the exhaust manifold just fine and it will be damn near permanent you just have to be careful not to overheat it in the process or you will cause more cracks. i have also found that summit is sometimes cheaper than anyone else out there, not on all products but on about 1/2.

go to your local welding shop and tell the guy that you need a brazing rod to braze your cast iron exhaust header, and use map gas torch or your oxy-acetylene torch set up if you have one,map gas torch kits are pretty cheap if money is an issue.you will need to use flux when brazing (dont know if you knew this or not).or my favorite local parts house guy tells me that there is an epoxy specifically designed for exhaust manifold repair called INFERNO,and that it is a very long term repair and not short term. good luck and let me know how it goes.

dbuck50- my brother was running short on cash and his manifold was cracked on his 4.9 I6. so i welded it up for him. the only thing is, to get a good weld, you would have to take the manifold off to do a more thorough search for cracks and for better angle. brazing takes too long (IMO) so i TIG welded his manifold.
i got a cast iron rod used for arc welding and knocked the coating off and used it for my filler wire.
you will also have to wire wheel it to get rust off
then make a groove with an angle grinder or dremel for the weld to "sit" in (more penetration)
cast iron is funny so you will have to preheat the area with a torch.
it sounds like alot but he thought it was better than spending 250 for a new one...let me know if i left anything out
good luck hope this helps

Now thats a cool fix. I will be getting rid of my factory exhaust and intake manifold and stock carb. No cracks in the manifolds and it starts instantly every time, but the carb needs a serious rebuild. If anyone needs any of these let me know. All I want is $5 for the gas and trouble plus shipping. If your local and pick it up it's free. Thanks

I welded cast iron to mild steel with my wirefeed welder. It's a gasless model, but the welds still look clean after using a wire brush. I am surprised that it worked and is still holding stong as a motor mount I designed for another car of mine.

when welding with stick electrode you can also use the colder welding method by only welding an 1/2 to 1 inch bead, let it cool to the touch and weld again and repeat the same process. You will also want to find the ends of the cracks and drill them out with a small drill bit so that you have releived the stress riser from the cast iron(the crack wont be able to restart if there isn't a place to keep cracking to)The grinding of the groove also allows deeper penetration and we all know deeper is better.Good Luck!!!
