Ok, the reason for posting this "dumb" question is because this weekend I got the metal door panels (for free) and I'm thinking of replacing my "green vinyl" door panel.
Any suggestions?
The vinyl ones get ratty, but the steel ones last almost forever.
I switched to the steel ones a couple of years ago for that reason.
I was working on my window regulator and had the panel off and on several times and the particle board backing totally got shredded. Then I remembered how simple the interior of our old '66 was. I lucked out and found a set of beautiful clean steelies in the wrecking yard that *hadn't* been hacked for stereo speakers.
The steel ones came in the base model Customs and the vinyl ones came in the Sport Customs and up. I see good metal ones all over the place, but it's hard to find a good vinyl one. So for those two reasons, I vote for vinyl. Plus I think it looks fancier and it is better at deading noise.
That is exactly what I am doing once the mechanical work is done on the doors. I vote for metal being the best too. About the only thing on the truck that is not rusted! I think in a side impact they might offer a bit of protection too. Especially against branches and such.
I'm surpised by the different number of panels Ford used on trucks. My 71 Sportcustom came with black vinyl with a plastic chrome race track strip around them. I worked on a friends 71 Sportcustom last week that had metal panels on it with a vinyl insert and a crome metal chrome strip all around it.
I replace mine a while back with the plain metal ones and put my 6x9's in them. I have another set I found and they are metal but also have the metal chrome around them. I am going to put the chrome pieces on mine here before long

Hmmm.... now I'm not sure what to do?
My existing green vinyl panels are in decent shape... but covering the metal panels with black vinyl sounds interesting too.
What I really want to do is to paint the interior black & grey...
Any suggestions?
I have a nice set of black metal panels, and I will be selling the door panels that are in my 1970 F-100 if anyone is interested.. It also has a Factory sliding rear window and the chrome around the windshield that is for sale too
