Just wondering if anyone has one in their '04 yet. Mine didn't come with one but was possibly thinking of putting one in. Does anyone know the cost or if this is even possible.
I got mine installed from the factory. I believe unless you got one on yours, you can't have the Ford system added aftermarket because it requires a specific wiring harness that you can only get currently from the factory install. If you want to get one aftermarket, you'll have to get one on your own. I don't think anybody makes a DVD system compatible with the overhead rail system if you have that.
I couldn't get the overhead factory dvd system on mine because as was mentioned above you need the harness - and the fact that ford was terribly behind in manufacturing of these so even if you could have the harness run it would still be a while before you could get one.
I ended up for about $300 more then the factory one getting 2 Alpine 5.8" headrest monitors - using a PS2 as the dvd-player and gaming system. I get it installed this Thursday. Personally am glad I didn't go factory once I realized that for similar money I could get a lot more system.
I received mine last month, compared to the DVD in our 03 Expediton, the screen is quite a bit smaller. If I knew that when I ordered, I would have gone aftermarket.
Best Buy has a dvd system that includes screens mounted in headrest that match your leather interior. They said the player would mount under the seat. That's not a very good place for a DVD player. Kind of pricey at $1500.
We are working on the harness to allow after build ordering and installs of the DVD. yes the screen is smaller than some aftermarket, but the factory DVD has other features like integration with the radiohead, including splitting the sources for speakers output and headphones ( driver can listen to dvd, headphone passengers the radio, or vice versa, or use the aux input included on the dvd) and control of each device (dvd and radio) by the buttons of the other.
the harness is not released yet, but the benefit of the rail system, is that when features become available, they can be added to your truck.
question, if this harness also had an open power and ground connector, would that be beneficial???
thanks for the interest.

Rambuctious - as far as I am concerned for the cost I would expect it to add I would say it would be worth having an open outlet and ground... you just never know what products they will come out with next - 5 years ago I couldn't have imagined DVD players in vehicles being as prevelent as they are and now I see them all the time on the road.
Thanks - I like all the info you provide and am looking forward to seeing the products you come out with for the new trucks.
Sure would be nice if I got the headsets and remote, they never came with it and I have called the dealer 5 times now. Don't know whats going on or exactly what I should have got.

I had the same problem too. It wasn't until I got home that I realized I didn't have the instructions for the DVD player....and found out that I was suppose to have the 2 wireless headset and remote. The dealership ordered the set and came in within 2 days. It goes by your VIN number...and the way the service rep told me was that it should have arrived before your vehicle got to the dealership.
Does anybody know if the DVD player will work with an aftermarket head unit? I do like the feature about splitting the source from DVD and head unit over the speakers. I'm wondering if it will do the same for an aftermarket headunit??? I don't want to be stuck with the stock player
It is my understanding that the factory DVD player uses a special harness to interact with the HU. I don't believe any aftermarket HU's have the ability to use that harness.
cavedave. the factory dvd will work only with the factory radio. they use a new protocol called CANbuss for the logic. this is required for the communication that allows the wplitting of the sources, and control of one device by the buttons of the other.
when i began evaluating the dvd and other devices on my truck's rail, we tried an fm modulator to compare the sound quality. our softwared engineers on the dvd had to re-flash the software on my dvd to fake it out to work with the modulator.
I have since gone back to the factory integration using the canbuss logic and the integrated feature set is a big improvement over the fm modulated hookup.
