shake in steering column

shake in steering column
1997 F-250 HD Powerstroke Crewcab 152,000- I began to notice play in the steering a while back. Finally tracked it down to the middle of the shaft which runs through the firewall to the gear box. The shaft is made to slip one inside the other but the inside shaft slips slightly before catching the outer. Has anyone else ever heard of this shaft wearing out in this way??? I never have. Shaft is $123.00 from local ford house. Probably gonna look into other options before buying. Any input is appreciated.

Yes, I have had them wear out on Chevy trucks I have owned. Haven't had a Ford one wear out yet but they are basically the same so I'm sure it's just a matter of time. Also check the rubber bushing down at the bottom where the shaft bolts to the gear box.
