Dave, search the '61 - '66 forums as well; this is a popular conversion.
The short story is, get a '73 - '79 donor truck and transplant the parts. If you can get one with the same engine as yours (or the one you want to put in) then you will have all the PS brackets, pulleys, and miscellaneous parts necessary to make it a quick and easy swap.
Most of it is a simple boltup.
you can also use the donor truck to switch over to front discs as well.
Essentially, youll need these:
Engine parts (PS pump brackets, pulleys, idler pulley if necessary, etc.)
PS pump and hoses (turn them in for remanufactured ones)
PS gearbox and pitman arm
PS steering column
Hi, I have a 68 2 wheeler and was wondering if I found a 68-72 that actually had power steering, wouldn't it be easier to just use those parts? Why the late 70's trucks?
If all you want to do is the PS conversion, the '68 and up parts will bolt right up, so you are correct that you could use the earlier one.
However, a popular conversion is the disc brakes as well, so if you want those, you will most likely need a '73 or later.
Although discs were available as a special order before '72, (they were mandated in '73); I am told they are not a reliable or cheap to fix as the '73 and later style - others more knowledgeable than I on this can advise you better.
However, there is a caveat here: From '66 to '69 or '70, Ford used 2 types of PS gearboxes. One is the Bendix and one is the Ford or Saginaw box. They both bolt up to the frame identically, but they are different lengths - which requires different steering columns.
As a matter of fact, I put PS in my '66 using the parts from a '69.
Check my gallery out, and you will see the differences.
Also, do a search in the '61 - '66 forum for Bendix power steering, and you will find a lot of help.
I HIGHLY recommend you make sure your '68 - '72 donor truck has the Ford PS gearbox before you start any swaps.

So IF I get a 68-72 donor truck,I would be best off harvesting the whole column with the power steering and all as to avoid compatability issues? The reason I ask is that I am going to check out a farm about 100 miles from my house this weekend that a friend of mine saw four 68-72 Ford trucks that are just setting out in the field. He talked to the landowner and they said the trucks are pretty much complete and they are fine with me taking whatever parts I think I could use.
My truck also has a 3 on the tree and the cup that the shifter is attached to is pretty loose on the column, therefor making it hard for me to shift. Especially into reverse and first. I have to use what I call "the putty knife trick" where I stick a putty knife in between the top of that shift cup and the bottom of the steering wheel to take up that slop so I can get into those gears. I do this while in neautral. It is a pain in the butt, and I would like to fix it,but am not sure what parts I need. If anyone on here has ever heard of this problem or knows what I need to fix it,PLEASE ADVISE! Thats why I thought if I found a truck with power steering, I might just replace the column and all??? Thanks for reading all this rambling from a new guy,any advice will be appreciated! This is a great site! Nice work!

One other thing I had to do when I did my conversion to day was change the position of the oil filter. The PS pump went in OK but I couldnt tighen the belt as there was interfence from the filter that was lying horizonal...I had 2 choices either convert it to hanging down or remote mount it to the inner fender which I did...Not a big problem but it is something to look out for.

Hi, I have a '69 F100 with manual steering.
Is the Ford powersteering gearbox the right size to replace the manual box in my truck?
I just found a 1970 truck at the local junkyard with a complete power steering box.
I am thinking of pulling that box along with the steering shaft. Do I need the pitman arm too?
Hey, I Have a 69 f-100 thats Four wheel drive. It has manual steering and drums all the way around. Any tips on where to find the stuff for the brakes, cause the junk yards never have any fourwheel drives, and when they do, they are almost always stripped of the good stuff when they get there. One more question, is the power steering gear box the same on a four-wheel drive as a two-wheel drive for that year model? Cause I've never seen another four-wheel drive up close in my year model. Thanks
Hey Steve, I would be interested in buying all parts off your truck having to do with the power steering conversion! I have a 68 2wd so it would be perfect for me! Let me know what you want! Thanks
