I converted my ps assit to a 78 ps box and i am having trouble. I did like the article said and it turns worse than before. It wont even turn my tires when just sitting. Somebody told me it was because I had a six inch lift and 36 swampers.
Has anybody done this conversion with a lift and big tires? And did you have any problems with power like me.
I did the conversion...have absolutely no problems turning 38.5" Swampers on my truck. Obviously check for any kind of binding...then check out the pump to make sure it's ok. Good luck.
chilly,
Did you us your original pump or did you up grade yours?
How did you do the drag link that goes from your pitman arm to the wheel? And what would bind...so I know what to look for. IT will move the tires when i am going but even when i am going it seems to have a hard time.
It would help me out if you could help especially if you did it and can move 38's.
I did the conversion and run 35's and it works excellent (except for the wine from the pump). One thing that could bind is the arm that goes between the frame and the springs. Mine is VERY close to hitting the frame. My arm that goes straight back from the drop arm to the axle is nearly horizontal and that's with no lift on a 73 F250 4x4. If yours is at a large angle that could be part of the problem.
I started off using the pump that came with the 79 F250 4x4 doner truck and it was cutting out so I replaced it with a rebuilt unit and it's been working great ever since.
I'd look for kinks/breaks in the hoses and maybe flush the whole system incase something is cloging the lines. You should also jack up the front end and top off the fluid then turn fully back and forth to try and get air out of the system.
You could also dump the ruturn line into a bucket and keep filling the top with new fluid in order to flush the old stuff out.
