No engine brake in 4th or 5th gear on my truck either, no matter what you do to the brakes, loaded or not.

I won't have to worry about the engine breaking issue, I ordered a six speed with mine. As for the recalibration, they recalibrated it for the second time on the 22nd of April 04. The low end that it lacked the day I bought it has gone away, the fuel milege is back up to 19.2 on the highway, and your not going to believe this but it runs so much better that it feels like it has a very mild chip. It just accelerates alot better and will climb hills around here in 5th gear where 4th was necessary before. Not sure which code they used, they didn't change the sticker under the hood this time, prolly the one that was mentioned early by blackhat like B28.09 (RC8).

PS that was stupid of ford to delete the engine breaking deal, if i had an auto and they took it away I would be one hot mama

They took away a few things that some of us had early on. Pilot injection, fuel economy and some acceleration performance.
