Surge

Lurked around long enough, certainly glad I haven't experienced the problem some of the fellow PSD owners have. I do have one!!

Has any one else experienced a surge at low/ mid acceleration thru 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear. Goes away if you mash it. Appears it does not matter on the speed nor whether it's level ground or moderate incline, such as entering interstate. Acquired this at appox 1800 miles. Unable to reproduce daily. Might go 3-4 days before happing again, Make no difference on driving pattern or person driving. Reported to dealer surge problem then went on 2500 mile trip.

Truck build date 4-03. Engine built 12-April- 03. Purchased truck August 18, 2003. 40 Miles at delivery, 30 of them by me test driving before purchase.

Truck to dealer for service and oil change 10-08 03 @4422. Passed all WDC test, dealer updated all Flashes to current level. Still had surge at times.

Return to dealer Oct 29 @5081miles for same problem. WDC unable to establish contact with PCM at all times. Ford Hot line approved replacement of PCM when available. Unavailable until Nov 16, 2003. Return on 11-26 at 5576 miles for new PCM which included Oct Flash. All fine on test drive by Tech and Dealer owner. Surge returned before holidays, called dealer and reported I would come after Holidays.

Returned Jan 03, @8803 miles. Tech ran WDC, no error codes, installed December flash, test drive, All OK. Drove around 2 hours, part in town, part out surge still thier. Called service Tech and informed him of surge still present. He suggested we set up appointement with Ford Field Service Engineer. Will start that Monday with Dealership owner.

Go to this thread, read completely…. and post. Follow, on page 3..MLF250’s format, it is good…and easy!
Important update to instructions on page 6, 17 posts down from the top of page.

ODOMETER reading at time of problem is critical.
In addition, please read more instructions, bottom of first page, posted by Tim L
Tell as many as you can about this thread.
The simpler the writing (posting) of “problem/odometer” reading………….the easier it will be to collate. Do not need many words. I must reduce all the date into a usable format; extra words will take more time to complete.

Thanks

Excellent place to start, it really sounds like they
have a wiring problem they are missing to me. Best of
luck!

Thanks Emtabmm, Guess we will wait and see what the FSE has to say. Or as they say, "Drive it till it brakes" then we'll fix it!!

I had a surge problem while sitting still idling -- scared the heck out of me. The dealer found that something was wrong with the fuse panel and replaced. Since then, no problems. Do you notice any slight momentary loss of electrical just before the surge? Such as, headlights dimming etc?

Check waste gate

I also had ther "surge" problem which wasn't being fixed by reflashing. Finally got repaired. The diesal mechanic told me that the waste gate for the turbo was recieving conflicting messages about opening/closing but was not sending an error message to the computer. The mechanic replaced a sensor (not sure what it was called). Works great now. Note next time your truck surges do you also notice the turbo spooling up and down with the surge???

Thanks for the info, The turbo does have an high/low whistle that matches the surge. Have been trying to tell service manager all along that the turbo was confused at times! Still waiting on FSE to schedule times!
