We converted to the Ex in 2000 when our 85 'burban gave up the ghost.

Really liked the 44 gallon tank this past Sunday as the wife and I spent 15 hours stranded on I90 and I86 in 3 + feet of snow in the Lake Erie snow belt. At one point I had drove 3 miles down unplowed I86 in 3 feet of snow till the road was block by the toy SUV's that thought they could get through. Spent the next 5 hours waiting for PennDot to plow us out.

I have 3 great excuses to buy the worlds largest and strongest production SUV....my beloved wife, and my 5 yr old baby girl, and my little man....my 9 yr old boy. They had been riding in a crew cab Nissan Frontier...at least it did have a full box frame with dual airbags and antilock brakes as well as 4x4...but now they have all that and they are in a tank.
I feel good knowing my love and my reason for living is riding around in a vehicle that tips the scales way in thier favor. To Ford and the Super Duty series ....I love you....and to my family....I offer the best protection I can possable afford. We each have our reasons, mine is my family.

Thumbs down Flaw in Government Crash Tests

You know what really irks me about the Government crash tests? Well, I'm going to tell you, you chose whether you want to read this or not.

What really irks me is that when they do the test for the 1-5 star crash ratings, they test it as if both vehicles are of the same size and weight. How often does that happen? When is the last time you saw two Excursions or two Aspires in an accident? They should have a few scenarios:
1) Like they have now, accident with similar size/weight vehicle.
2) Accident with average size/weight vehicle - very few small cars would still have a 5-star rating I would guess.
3) Accident with a typical full size truck - I doubt any small car would maintain a 5-star rating.
They can still have the different kinds of crashes: head-on, offset, t-bone. Tests based on more realistic scenarios, I would think, would shed a whole new light on crash worthiness of a vehicle and more people would understand the benefits of driving a larger, and safer, vehicle.

Well... if we're treating this in an entirely selfish context, it wouldn't be logical to encourage the government to educate the unwashed masses, would it?

Sorry, please don't get me wrong in this. I am NOT an advocate of government intervention in the free-market, BUT as long as they are feeding information, shouldn't it be more realistic? Maybe I'm not getting what you are saying here because I'm not sure who you are referring to as being selfish. If I am missing the point here, what are you talking about?

I just reread your post a few times, ZBeeble, and I think I get it now. The selfish ones are the ones hording away the Excursion (and other large vehicles) for their own safety from those you call the 'unwashed masses', i.e. the fools that don't have a clue about the real world.
You're quite the humorist, LOL.

To speed the process, it might be simpler if we had an emoticon at our disposal for dripping sarcasm. Hrm. How would you render that? Heh. I've been watching a lot of "Voyager" lately. If you read that post in the voice of "Tuvok (sp?)" (the vulcan) with an appropiately raised eyebrow, it might render the appropriate mental image.

I've been very much in touch with my inner vulcan lately ... but that will all change --- with the debut of Dr. Who, I'm going to have to get in touch with my inner gallifreyian again.

Seriously, though, we live in an unprecidented era. One in which the "mass market" (or the unwashed masses) are marching to the beat of one drum --- the monocle that occupies the very center of the "average" home. Critial thought is at an all time low. In comparison, in times past when the average person may have only had a third grade education (or less), this same average person would have opinnions of his own.

What's interesting to me about this discussion is that we have an unmarketed vehicle here. There is no "lifestyle" beemed into our homes that caused us to choose this vehicle. I suspect that many of the people on this forum have exercised independant thought.

... now you had all better go put on your tin foil hats before you're found out ...
