Took my Ex to the local Ford dealer to change fuel filters. I didn't feel like laying in the snow to change the lower filter. First time I had my truck at Ford delaership since I purchased vehicle in September 2009. Received a letter in the mail today from dealer offering me 125% of book value. The letter said they are in desperate need of pre-owned certified Excursions and my vehicle meets their criteria. I guess this confirms why used Excursion prices in this area are insane.
I've gotten letters like that from dealer's for virtually every car I've ever owned.
by 125% of book, they really just mean 125% of dealer's trade in value (not blue book), and they'll give you that because they're selling you a car at full retail. Call them and ask if they'll write you a check for 125% of KBB or NADA trade in value if they really "need" inventory... you'll find out how serious they are.
This has been a hot topic recently and I started looking around at the prices near me. They have definitely been going up since I got mine a year ago on both gas and diesel models... Even in the down economy.
I think that new they were out of the price range of a lot of people who wanted them, but as time passes those same folks.. me included are able to afford the used price of them so that opens up a whole new buyer demographic. For example I could not afford $50K for a new one or $25K for a couple year old one but at $12.5 I am now in a price range that I can afford the payments......
So it is supply and demand in a sense... I think the GM/ Mopar bankruptcy had a lot to do with it. folks that were looking at Suburbans for example may have decided that they prefer to buy a car from a company that did not have to be bailed out by the government....
I read several articles in trade enewsletters that focused on that issue... they are also saying that lots of dealers are shifting their focus of sales to late model used cars instead of new ones so they may actually be telling the truth... Ill find the links and post the sites in another thread as the inside info can be pretty interesting

Yep, just a gimmick. I get that letter every once in a while for my VW that I don't even have anymore. (Like a Golf is in high demand.) lol
And full retail price is usually about $4k to $6k over what they have in the vehicle.
I stopped by a local Ford dealer to look at an F150 Raptor sitting on the lot. A salesman came out, and I expected him to push a sale. Instead, he was pushing me to sell my 2005 EB V10 4WD ... said he has several customers that've asked for one. Local market currently means I can sell my X for about the same price I paid for her 3-1/2 years ago. That is very tempting, but there's nothing else on the road right now which appeals to me within my price range, so it looks like I'll keep my X ... for now.
Southpaw, I agree with everything you said.. Five years ago I wanted a 2005 Excursion since my 2000 Expedition was paid for. However, I decided to build a detached garage with an office on top. I knew that I could pick up a used Excursion in a few years at half the price. In September of 2009 I found a 2005 6.0PSD, 4x4, Limited with 34,000 miles in mint condition built on 9/5/05 and originally sold on 1/6/06. The rear seats were never sat in. It went to an auction and sold for $25,900. The used car dealer owed me some favors and I reluctantly paid $28,500. We were both whining about the price. The dealer could have sold it for $33,700. He admitted later that he sold it to cheaply and he failed to recognize how in demand they are. I think I paid too much but I wanted the vehicle. It truly is a cream puff and still smells new today. He still made $2600.00 in two days. I know of several dealers who are looking for F250 crew cab short beds with the 6.0. One salesman told me if he finds the right vehicle he can put 4 deals together. Good used cars are bringing premium prices.
I found the original owner in New York State. He traded the Excursion in on a Toyota Tundra. He told me they gave him $22, 750 for the Ex and immediately sent it to the auction. It is obvious the Toyota dealer did not know what they had. I also found the original dealer and they provided me with maintenance records and told me they would never have sent that vehicle to an auction.
Since I plan on keeping the Ex for 10 or more years the extra money I paid will come to about $250.00 per year. Right now I think I could sell it for a minium of $30,000.
I have been considering selling mine lately. What do you all think a mint, located in AZ Ex, always garaged 04 Eddie Bauer 4x4 6.0 Diesel, w/70K miles would bring?
Scottman70. In this area a minimum of $25,000 sine there are no rust issues. Is it an early 04 or a late 04. I looked at a 2005 EB 6.0 Good condition with 87,000 miles about 6 months ago. The dealer would not move off of $25,350.
OK, so i was stupid and paid full list, $55K. But it's all mine and I love it! I just hope my loved ones can find a vault big enough for the two of us!
