Why I drive an Excursion
The site lists cars and trucks with an estimated rollover probability that is based on the height of the center of gravity divided by the track width. The following is a summary.
- 1% to 4% --- wide and low vehicles (note: not particularly fuel efficient) includes lincoln town car, mercedes 500 series, BMW 740 and 528. All very wide vehicles. Very unlikely to rollover.
- 4% to 7% --- midsize low sporty autos. Includes Jaguar S, Lexus GS400, Lincoln LS. Not many entries in this category, really
- 7% to 10% --- small cars, some minivans. Honda Accord is here, but so is the Honda oddesy. Mazda 626, porche 911, subaru legacy are other examples.
- 10% to 14% EXCURSION. We share this category with: ford focus, doge neon, dodge caravan, chevy cavalier, acura integra, subaru impreza, VW new beetle and Honda CIVIC.
- 14% to 18% a few notables: Toyota sienna, Mercedes M-class, Navigator/Expedition, GMC Yukon and friends, and the F350.
- 18% to 22% some suvs and trucks here: chevy Siverado, acura SLX, durango, land rover rangerover, Suzuki swift (?!?)
- 22% to 27% Many more suvs and trucks: chevy S-10, land rover Discovery, nissan pathfinder, explorer 4 door, chevy S-10, toyota tundra.
- 27% to 32% somewhat silly vehicles: Blazer 2dr, PT Cruzier (ok, I lied... this is a stupid vehicle), explorer 2dr, jeep grand cherokee, Montero sport, Xterra, 4runner.
- 32% to 38% Silly Vehicles: Subaru Forrester, Kia Sportage, Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, Honda CRV, Jeep Cherokee, Kia sportage
- 38% to 43% Truly silly vehicles:Suzuki Vitra, Toyota RAV4, Chevy tracker.
At the end of the day nothing has changed in the last 4000 years... its still survival of the fittest. The caveman with the sharpest spear kills the most food blah blah blah...
I have also pulled a trailer with a large, damaged airplane on it and still got 14mpg with it.
What I find amzing is that I can do 75 mph on the freeway, in the hills, and the car doesn't even seem like it's loafing. My girlfriend and I have been all over the US in it and with a few touch ups like XM radio, DVD, and a tempurpedic mattrress in the back, it's just plain ol comfortable to travel in.
In fact, I'm thinking about getting a lower milage 7.3 for the stable because when my current x dies, I may not be able to find a suitable replacement.
Just my 2 cents worth.
Driven many different vehicles over the years and there's no doubt which one is the best.
I am in Real Estate and transport quite a number of customers. Usually they are very impressed by the size and comfort they find in an Excursion. Some even mentioned they would trade in their Chevy's
Anyway, I agree with a lot of posts here, that even if the price of fuel is more costly right now, it can't buy back your own or your families life or health if you are getting in a serious accident with one of those Mickey Mouse cars.
My wife drives a 2000 Durango and I have to say that the Excursion has a definately the better road handeling and grip, even my vehicles is so much taller (4x4). Ok, I have 33's on mine, which certainly improve the grip, but still, I don't experience the sway as I do when I drive the Durango to the car wash... I won't go any further than that in it....
Service and friendlyness of my dealership is excellent and that is just another reason why I would not give my X away any more. Simply the best vehicle I have ever owned.
Long live the Excursion!
I also work as a firefighter, so I get to see the aftermath of peoples' bad driving. When it came time to replace my wife's VW EuroVan last year, it came down to two vehicles: an Excursion or a Suburban. We've never owned an American vehicle, so we had no preference. We drove both and the decision was unquestionable; we loved the X and hated the Suburban. I didn't even know it had a V10 until after we decided to buy it! The gas mileage sucks, it handles like a truck, but other than that, it's one of the best vehicles I think is on the road. Safety is obviously a concern, and I rest easier when I'm at work and know my wife is on the road with the kids in the X.
Of course, my daily driver is a 1967 Morris Mini Cooper which could probably fit in the Excursion. It makes up for the X's handling (like a go-cart on wheels) and gas mileage (40-50 mpg).
Funny thing: when we were in Santa Fe, our hosts were appauled that we would drive such a vehicle. Her: "Do you know how many third world countries you could feed with the money you spend on fuel?" My answer: "Good thing I don't give money to third world countries, eh." It went downhill from there. She loved the fact I drive a Mini, but I didn't even want to breach the subject that the Mini puts out more pollutants in its one-mile drive to work than the X will in a year.

Nice collection of vehicles you have... !
I have the perfect picture for you - you just gonna love it, but I don't know how to insert a picture from my harddrive in the text here...
If you know how, let me know, and I'll post it right here... Thanks

Let me ask you a non-Ford related question: How did you get the pictures right in your message box? Any help on how to embed a .jpg file for example would be appreciated...
Thanks ahead of time!
