My V-10 is unreliable. I had to replace the original spark plugs when I bought it after 130k miles to get it to run smoothly again

if you dont like the 300 i6 or the 6.8v10 than what engine is good? you dislike 2 of the toughest longest lasting truck engines ever made!

There are a couple passenger vans running around town with over 400K.

I think they have had to change the oil....

The block I pulled out with over 140K miles had almost NO perceptible ridge in the cylinder wall, and the original machining marks were visible.

the 6.8 is one of the best truck engines ever made. mine has 160,000 miles of abuse and
is still going strong!about a quart of oil gets used between changes, but its don that from new. the oil just go's into places it can not come back from.

My 1999 V-10 is the best truck I have ever owned. Just last week it flipped 317000!
Only major repair was the intake gasket failed at 275000. Other than that I have replaced alternator, serp belt, battery, water pump, rad hoses, cops, plugs, ball joints, radius arm bushings, tie rod and ends, trans service, wipers, and lots of tires. It is running very well and still getting 15-16 mpg on the highway! Hope to turn 400000 by the end of the year. Great truck and the best motor Ford has built!

2 things sold me on the v10 before I purchased mine. 1) My brother in law(hard core Chevy guy) went to Wyo tech and when they studied the engines he said the Ford V10 was the best build/designed gas engine on the market period and he figured(as did his instructor) that they would be a very long lasting engine. 2) My friend who owns a machine shop has rebuilt exactly 1 v10 - it had over 300k miles on it and he was stunned with how good it looked inside. He stated that he merely had to put bearings and rings in it - didn't even have to turn the crank. That was enough to make me a believer. Since then I have heard of several (not just on this site, but in person) going over 300k and still going strong. I don't think they all will go that long, but it sure is nice to hear about that.

Isn't the V 10 just a 5.4 with 2 more holes added on. Just a long small block so to speak with less torque then many smaller V8S. What i am getting at is the 5.4 is just as or probably more durable than the V10. Some guy has over 900000 or 1 mill on a 5.4 in a box van and it is still going strong. I think it has been featured on FTE more than once. So i think u all need to give more credit to the lowly 5.4 which probably holds the record for longevity and of which the V10 wouldn't exist at all with out the 5.4 V8 to start with.

I have seen several over 350,000 and one with 550,000 miles they use a little oil but my 99 did that with 15,000 miles. Definetly one of Ford's best engines yet.

yes all 6.8's use a little oil from new. ( from what i have heard ) Mine has 160,000 and i pulled the pan and the casting marks have not worn off yet.I plan to run it to 400,000 to 600,000 miles, rebuild it my self. ( i am going to school to be ASE certified) rebuild the 4R100 or pull it and put a zf 6 speed in.then run it to 1,000,000!!! who knows maybe i can do it with no rebuilds!!!

I have 156,000 miles on my 2002 f350 V10. Only servicing: change oil ; serpent belt; new plugs at 100,000 miles;

I carry a 3000 lb camper at all times.

I use regular gas.

What casting marks? Also, mine has 165K miles and burns very little oil. Synthetic will burn more.

I bought my 05 Excursion V10 with 22K on the ticker, switched to full synthetic at the first oil change and have run it ever since. The vehicle now has 168K miles, it uses about 1 quart of oil between changes at 5K mile intervals. It was used to pull our car hauler and did so with average 9-10K trailer and load weight for about 65K of the miles I've put on. The Excursion has had no engine or transmission troubles at all and still runs extremely well. I believe it will give me many more miles of trouble free service.

Sorry you are having trouble with yours snapper, I hope you are able to get them resolved satisfactorily.

I researched this site heavily b4 I bought a 01 f350 cc 4x4 with the V10... I bought my truck with 156K...runs flawless.. Thankyou for everyone who has posted with Mileage and their experience with their trucks. I didnt buy the psd for the 5 to 6K more I would have had to pay with 150K plus mileage. I pull a 10,500 toy hauler trailer loaded. I have the following mods. K&N cone AFE ram air intake, single Flowmaster after cat with duals, New superchips cortex programmed computer for Tow mode, I have 8 inch lift, bags, running 37" toyos. This truck pulls hard!! I have never had a PSD, But I have passed cars going up passes towing my trailer....I get 5.5 mpg worst on steepest grades at pulling averaging 7.5 mixed..mostly steep grades, I get 8,5mpg in town, and 10.5 mixed freeway to 12 mpg tops unloaded. I will keep the truck and take the gamble having the V-10 based upon what I have read off these message boards...Thankyou everyone who has posted info.. Especially hearing from Shops seeing 295 to 400k plus and still running...good to hear!
