My thoughts exactly, Monster. I'd guess an autopsy would reveal a casting/manufacturing defect that was not detected before it broke in a catastrophic manner. Would be interesting to hear what happened. I am also a bit curious why a 38K motor has no warranty coverage.
What exactly went wrong at 38K to destroy the engine?
Wish I knew. The oil was just changed. Oil was still good after the damage was done. Everything seemed fine. It has been 4 weeks and I am still trying to get all the issues worked out.

What made you think the engine needed to be replaced? Did it make a sound? Stop running? Did the mechanic just say "yep it's toast and you need a new engine"? Just trying to understand the background. Like Deluxe said there could have been a casting or manufacturing issue that led to the failure. It does happen but it's pretty rare.

The full story, I took it for a delivery, came back reloaded went on another delivery, came back reloaded, went to start it up and heard this very loud pinging sound. My mechanic did a compression test and then broke down the engine. Where he found the valve spring broke, the valve put a hole in the top of the piston, the piston shoved the valve back into the head and created a new hole, and broke the valve. I have replaced the engine, after the engine was replaced it is still running crappy, just without the heavy pinging sound. Had the truck towed to the dealership. They are checking it out now. The preliminary checks have showed nothing wrong. Now they are doing a complete electrical and computer check. They said if this does not find something then they will have to break the engine back down to find out the cause. Ford has special tools that the normal mechanic doesn't have. That way they can charge a whole lot more money.
Well sorry to hear that. For all our advances in manufacturing and casting bad parts slip through. Most will find this engine strong and dependable and calling the entire engine line "junk" is a unfair assessment.
If you replaced the entire engine why would there be a need to tear down this engine? Or did your mechanic replace the damaged parts form the existing engine? If so what was all replaced? What do you mean by it's running "crappy"?
I'm asking because there is alot of information and people on this forum and it may save you some time, money and headaches by providing this info.
Also a well equipped shop should be able get all the same tools as a Ford dealership.
2001 F-250 4x4. Will turn 240,000 miles this week. Lot more power than the 128,000 mile 1999 F-250 that it replaced when I totaled it. This truck uses a quart of oil every 2000 miles. Other than that, it is great.
Fixed over the years;
Brakes, tires, wiper blades, AC Compressor, Plugs, Ball joints, Wheel hubs, and a Clutch (at 210K).
Current Problems;
Rear end whine (getting looked at next Friday) pinion seal leaking.
Few paint chips/ rust starting to creep out from under the paint.
Front rotor(s) warped
Chip in windshield
Bent tailgate (550lb steel plate on edge was too much for the inner liner to handle)
Currently has 291,000 on it. Runs great and is well worth having rear end looked at.
This is a truck that has lived on Cape Cod it's entire life.
My V10 is crap. After 3 years I had to have the wiper blades changed. Since then I had to...hmmm, thinking, thinking, nothing. I'll never buy another!!!
I just financed a 04 V10 with 95k on it if that tells you anything about what I think of their reliability.
I know this is a very controversial opinion and I don't mean to spark the gas vs diesel debate, but IMO the 01+ V10 is a "safer" buy in terms of reliability than the 6.0L.
