I use a strap wrench. The kind with a rubber strap that you wrap around back under itself. Never had a problem getting the filter off. Like has already been stated, make sure to poke a hole in the bottom of the filter and let it drain out for a while before removal. Didn't do that once, only once, big mess. Nothing like a filter rolling down the driveway dumping out 2 quarts of oil on its way down with a guy cussing and swearing rolling out from under a truck with oil dripping off his elbows chasing that damn filter.

I also use the big channel locks, I crucnch up filters a lot that are stubborn to get off. I often use them to turn the bottom of the filter when it is impractical to get at the side. I rarely use them to tighten the filter unless it leaks and then only at the top of the filter where there is support, and very gently.

I used to use a rubber strap wrench and it was a real pain. I finally bought the oversize oil filter wrench and it works much better.
