I6 223 block & oil dip stick question
I've got a '57 F100 with the 223 & 3 on the tree. At some point in the trucks life, someone added the adapter for a spin on oil filter (relevant to capacity maybe).
The question:
After removing the oil filter and draining the oil for an oil change, only about 4 quarts went in before the dipstick read full... not just at the bottom of the hash marks, but at the top of them. Since the truck should take 6qts total... where were the other two quarts hiding when I drained it?
I know there was a thread about dip stick length and if I remember correctly, the majority stated it should be ~12" long... Mine is only just over 8" from tip to cap.
What's right?

Well, I can only speak to the '60 223, which takes 5 quarts and one more for oil filter change. However that would be the original canister type filter. The spin-on's don't hold as much.
Have you ran your engine since you refilled it with four quarts? Does it seem to be the original oil pan? If your dipstick was shorter than stock wouldn't it take even more oil to get to the full mark and not less?
Just some dumb questions I had.
