hey everyone does anyone know anything about MAF sensors? wut exactly do they control and how? anyway to make it think its detecting more air than it actually is? according to my dealer, mine has been shot since umm..last july..but the truck still runs great..ne help?
The Mass Airflow Sensor measures the "mass" of air entering the engine. It is used by the puter to optimize fuel mixture, timing, shifting. If it has failed (with a check eng code) the puter has to rely on throttle position sensor, which is much less accurate.
Since the air density is affected by both altitude and ambient temperature, a mass airflow sensor compensates for these external fluctuations automatically. The sensor uses current through wires to heat them, with the air cooling the wire changing the voltage output proportionaly to the mass air flow through it.
If the truck runs great with no check engine light, it seems odd that it needs replacement. I have heard of a failure where it outputs too much voltage and is not detected as MAF sensor failure, but the engine may run poorly, bad fuel mileage, ping, etc.
thanks ozark..check engine light has been on, twice but with such an expensive part, i havent gotten around 2 buying one..ive looked around n im probly going to purchase a granatelli cold-port tuned aftermarket one since it is cheaper than stock. mpg isnt really that bad i drive close to 400 miles a week and have to fill at most twice..but i also kinda run it hard..looks like this sensor is gonna b purchased sooner than hoped..
